Decades long drive towards political correctness, but they went into overdrive with social media. Social Media is like creating your own media walled garden staffed only with your own propagandists and each one is self-serving and wants to promote themselves. So you get people ratcheting things up, and trying to prove their value by being more pure and more outraged than the next. OP's comic is just one example, and the author is trying to get good boy points by being more outraged than the next.
