Sales are slowing down, people are stopping playing, the game is already dying, interest is waning, and people are returning to MK8D.
This doesn't look good for a multiplayer game, much less a launch title for their next main console, and much less a game with Mario as its mascot.
How can Nintendo reverse this downward trend and save this game from failure?
It needs a better roster. Add characters from Donkey Kong, RPGs, Wario Land, Wario Ware, and Mario Party.
Make level transitions only exist in knockout tour so its opt-in rather than opt-out.
You can have both, but don't force the one that people don't like.

I would be VERY surprised if the DK DLC never happens however. Diddy and new Pauline's omissions would be very jarring.

People don't usually hang around boxes, you just race like shit/spin out at the start, get your goods, then hold them the rest of the race.
Bagging can only really be stopped by making the items piss (bad in its own way, now the game is just time trial simulator with bananas to dodge if you're not in first), removing the second item slot (You can still trail items for the extra slot, this just prevents smuggling star+gold shroom or other strong combos into first) (probably best solution), or adding a discharge timer that gives you item dysentery after X amount of time, (doesn't really SOLVE bagging, it just makes it less consistent, because you need to get that god pull actually in the last lap, and can't just hold onto a god pull the entire race. However, this is more of Nintendo playing the game for you)

Secondly: Add a second worldwides mode for just 3-lap tracks
Thirdly: Item balance. Nerf gold shrooms and make them less common. Allow 1st-3rd to get better items more frequently. They should be frequently tweaking the item balance until it reaches a point where frontrunning is difficult but possible and, even if bagging remains viable, isn't just the best strategy in every situation. They need the game to reach a point where the races aren't just decided at the final shortcut.
