>modern game has a "minimalistic" UI with a stock white font and black/white translucent rectangles
Instant into the trash.

Man, what the fuck happened to game UIs? They used to be unique, cool and fun. Having as much iconic gusto to them as the game itself, adding to the atmosphere and the overall experience. You can instantly identify so many games just by their UI elements. Nowadays all UIs are literally interchangeable. It seems they're trying to make games as bland and forgettable as possible even down to the most basic elements.

It's thrown together at the last minute. Often these game development scams are run in such a way that developers spend long stretches of time with no clear goals followed by short sprints where everything needs to be slotted into a coherent format based on some bullshit. The worst case scenario would be throwing out a fully functional menu because the manager didn't like it, they need to fit in some new random thing or because it didn't test well.
It's why the most ubiquitous menu is a character render in a void with particle effects, diamond icons and a tabulated layout, it represents minutes of work at most.
>>715736046
This stuff is less functional than putting thought into menus, because none of it is fit for purpose. At the risk of starting Nintendo shitflinging, the menus in BotW/TotK fall into these same traps, so something that is supposed to be used for experimentation and interaction becomes something that is often avoided as much as possible to the player's detriment.
>>715736781
The presentation of the menu and "things the character knows" are ways to convey the context of the world, a worldview and way of thinking, either from the perspective of the designer, the character or even just to guide the player to a specific perspective.
The menu is in and of itself part of the art.

Because everything is highly specialized. Some fag goes to school and learns about "User Interface Philosophy" from some chink making smartphone apps as addicting as possible for boomers. All the book written on UX and UI are by marketing losers trying to get retards to spend more time clicking and tapping and buying.

So the game industry has a team of 300 people making a game, they have a whole team of fags just for UI, who do they hire? An artist who can create beautiful and unique hand designed UI designs? No. They hire the "safe" guy with a degree in user experience design to make it as braindead simple as possible and able to fit the widest possible arrangement of displays.

So now game UIs are all made by corporate graphics design fags trained to communicate with vector shapes and all artistry is lost.

a lot of it comes from the apple design philosophy that ui should disappear leaving you with just the "content" i.e. the iphone is just a screen that melts away
this is political because it allows the user to simply forget about the invisible middleman that mediates and controls everything about their experience.
i too prefer loud expressive ui that calls attention to itself. the ps5 console ui is underappreciated in this regard and makes it feel anachronistic compared to, for instance, the switch ui which leans much more toward the corporate hell apple model
Anonymous No.715745356 [Report]
It's mostly because games go through a billion and a half changes until they release nowadays. It's just safer to stick with a generic UI.

You can have both but modern UI is typically worse in function too. Just compare Morrowind's UI to Skyrim's.

Because showing the actual Borderlands 2 knockoff inventory screen would blow the narrative out of the water. Every one of these dumbass memes seeks to make things look worse than they actually are by outright lying and fabricating when they can't find organic examples.
