failure actually did have consequences, i remember it taking like 10 minutes to load a save in fallout on our family pc.

it is pretty lame needing to replay the entire level because you die to a cyberdemon monstercloset in the last area of the map.

one doom64 level straight up has an inescapable lava pit that suddenly opens up on you in the room before the level exit..... because....... reasons...

I also autistically cant cope with games that allow quicksaves. Now I HAVE to use it after every single encounter. And I'm eventually going to forget about it, play for hours and lose all my progress.

Hated the bg3 dice roll system. Of course I'm gonna reload if I get a one. Honor mode is the only tolerable way to play

You can simply choose not to save scum. The game is as hard as you want it to be.

Every Doom level is designed to be beatable from a pistol start, meaning you can die and keep playing starting the level over if you wish

Just don't save, and pistol start any level you die on, you big baby. They're all designed to be beatable that way because that's how they were tested.
Pistol starting also has a knock-on effect of making you better at the game by teaching you to do more with less and encouraging more secret hunting.

I agree with OP. Dark Souls ruined every game with quick saves for me.
Except Deus Ex. Deus Ex is still cool.
But, like, DOOM, Half-Life? What's the point of these games if there's no challenge whatsoever?

This is a (you) problem, if you can't control your saving, stick to consoles or play shitty console versions of Doom and half-life since they don't have quicksaves

Develop some free will for God's sake. Saving at any time is there in case you have to pause the game and want to pick up back where you left off. If you use it for any other reason, of course it's going to feel cheap.
I don't do mid-level saves ever. If you need to savescum, you should be playing on a lower difficulty.
This autistic obsession with savescumming ruining a game also seems to be the result of people only playing a game once and then never touching it again. Games, especially old games, and double-especially old PC games should, and were meant to be REPLAYED, usually on a higher difficulty than your previous playthrough. Instead of trying to make your one playthrough perfect, focus on mastering the game over time through multiple playthroughs, then it doesn't even matter if you quicksave. Maybe have a final goal of beating the game on the hardest difficulty without quicksaving, and then you can consider a game mastered. Maybe you wanna do a no-death run with no backtracking savescumming before you consider a game beaten. Come up with your own criteria that feels right.

>Save scumming bad
Lol, when you save scum you are allowed to experiment, do something fun and use your inventory items you'd never used before.
Gameplay becomes stale and uninteresting if you aren't allowed because you become conservative and boring.

It's gotten a little ridiculous recently with pistol-start memes, but that's really just good design that it's beatable pistol-start because that's how Doom (and Wolf 3D) would punish the player for dying. You'd start over the level with a low-ammo pistol and nothing else.

Haven't pistol started Doom 2, but I beat it without mid-level saves.

>>715744262
>but that's really just good design that it's beatable pistol-start
Actually, it's beatable pistol-start because that's how you playtest your levels during development. Each level is designed separately, you can't know how much ammo player would bring over from the previous one.

I haven't played that yet, but I've beaten a lot of hard FPS games on the hardest difficulty (Serious Sam TFE, NAM, Blood, Ultimate Doom) without mid-level saves. It just takes some planning ahead and having a full knowledge of how to do certain encounters.
