I don't do mid-level saves ever. If you need to savescum, you should be playing on a lower difficulty.
This autistic obsession with savescumming ruining a game also seems to be the result of people only playing a game once and then never touching it again. Games, especially old games, and double-especially old PC games should, and were meant to be REPLAYED, usually on a higher difficulty than your previous playthrough. Instead of trying to make your one playthrough perfect, focus on mastering the game over time through multiple playthroughs, then it doesn't even matter if you quicksave. Maybe have a final goal of beating the game on the hardest difficulty without quicksaving, and then you can consider a game mastered. Maybe you wanna do a no-death run with no backtracking savescumming before you consider a game beaten. Come up with your own criteria that feels right.
