SoR4 was a lighting in a bottle, a miracle even in this day and age, it still can be played exactly like SoR2, has the same pacing and the whole combo system was entirely optional and not some over the top anime juggle fest forced upon you. Pretty much the only bad aspect of it was the combo system if you ever played Mania, since you had to try-hard the entire game not to get counter-punched in 1 frame by one of the enemies. This ranges from ok to bad depending on the character you play as, since some have more recovery frames. But generally casuals played normal or easy so no one cared.
New Shinobi is only made by SoR4 art guys, not the gameplay designers, we know its Sega doing the game design, and its metroidvania slow burn shit, which is the opposite of Shinobi.
Ragebound is much better in comparison, proper fast pace level design, it's just that the devs really fucking insist on putting gimmick shit like colored enemies or 2nd character gimmick puzzle that really adds nothing to the gameplay outside of making simon-says chore moments in your game. Also, the level design and gimmick of bouncing off enemies just scream The Messenger, so instead of the game having Guillotine Throw like NG arcade did, you bounce off the enemies constantly and can basically just avoid everything unscathed.
Natsume Atari I think is the only GOAT retro dev, those are actual old heads that made the original games and remade Ninja Warriors and KAGE Shadow of the Ninja. Those are fantastic games without the modern gimmick shit that most indies insist on adding all the time.
Anyway, I will still play both, can't say no to this genre.
