Why is it so hated compared to Tropical Freeze despite having far better level design?

I don't think it is hated. It's just not as good. Tropical Freeze really improved upon the things that maybe weren't so good about the first one (Villains are one-note Crash Bandicoot rejects, the sound track is very forgettable, mandated motion controls which got fixed in the 3DS version, admittedly)
I still raved about this game being great when it came out, because it was.

Hated is too strong, it's Tropical Freeze that made slight improvements to what Returns had.

I found all the levels perfectly fine except some of the orb levels, the difficulty spike on those is absurd.

>shitty 240p screen at 30fps
>second most importantly move in game used dozens of times per level tied to a shitty, laggy waggle
How the fuck are either of these preferable to Switch?

Wii with mod/emulation to remove waggle shit is ideal, but Switch is also very good aside from slightly slower loading

Just doesn't do anything memorable. The world themes are nothing DK hasn't already done, and is even a little too similar to the usual NSMB batch. The tikis are also just really boring villains.

The game is leagues beyond the kind of effort that was going into NSMB. It actually has cool and memorable level themeing

Yeah while it sticks to the familiar world themes of DKC, Returns is full of unique assets and setpieces and attemps to create a consistent, immersive world, not even remotely comparable to the lazy, soulless copypaste of NSMB.

Not him but aside from the loading, the Switch version carries the same compromises the 3DS version has regarding graphics

Honestly, DKCR on Switch 2 is the best version of the game putting the price, co-op, and the visual changes aside. Full 60FPS without drops, button controls and motion controls, and all the 3DS content

Because it played like ass on the Wii thanks to the wiimote wagglan. Also because it's just not as good, whether graphically or gameplay wise, as Tropical Dong

I prefer this game over tropical freeze. It’s more challenging and the 4 character gimmick in tropical freeze was kinda pointless since dixie makes the other 2 completely useless

Returns was a great game when it came out. There weren't many 2.5D games, it had a nice graphical style that made it look good despite being on the Wii, it was a return to DKC style platforming. It was just fresh so it got a pass on its shortcomings. Nowadays its judged without context so of course it's not as good as other DKCs.
Same with New Super Mario Bros. I might feel "bland" but there was such a huge drought of 2D Mario that when we got one, it felt so fresh despite not excelling at anything.
