DK64 is awful. I played through it just long enough to get to the arcade game and it was a chore. I did it again years later on a Wii U and it was worse because it aged horribly. I don’t know how these Bong-developed games appeal to people

Well of course. A masterpiece is the work that proves that a creator has become a master of their craft. This team didn't need to prove that.

It's a great collectathon maybe one of the best ever. Level design is fun and sets up lots of good backtracking moments. Kongs are all unique and fun in their own way. Unlocking powerups feels good same with unlocking zones. Boss fights and some enemies are especially memorable, and the 4player pvp mode was insanely fun for the time.

the fact dudes name is literally Plant is very funny to me. ign's brand is gonna be cooked so fast if they continue down this path of running punched up PR "reviews" written by nobodies groomed by nintendo staff for months in advance via exclusive press events.

Not every game can be a masterpiece. It’s still a GOTY contender though, slightly better than Astrobot imo but I’ve only played a few hours so far

It feels like the majority of the shrine challenges are just super easy combat trials that you clear in ten seconds, wish they would've went harder on platforming and bananza-specific ones

ive been watching it on streams today and i cannot believe anyone would actually buy this game. its literally a tedious "run around in circles collecting things" game. this is so bad. you all cant be serious right now. it doesnt even have cool DK music, its just some generic valley music.

holy shit i cant believe this is what DK is now, i am shocked by how bad this is. its like the DK version of Pokemon scarlet. even the paid shills cant pretend to have fun with it on stream.

>It's new, it's shiny, and it's an exclusive, incentivizing even more under or misinformed sheople to go and buy a Nintendo Switch™ 2, IN STORES NOW :D
By modern "standards", it IS a masterpiece. You're mad at a symptom, not the sickness as a whole, but I share your frustration. Unfortunately, if S2 sales figures are accurate, I don't think things will get any better. There's too much bullshit momentum.

Yep, pretty much this.
Piss-easy difficulty measures are the primary underlying factor that's killing modern Nintendo games.
Nintendo needs to accept that not every fucking gamer out there is a retarded ADHD 6-year old, and that seriously need to implement actual difficulty options into their mainline games from this point forward.

nta, but if nintendo bothered to replace DK's design in mk AND the player icon, with no means of the rare version available unless you redeemed one specific to a certain game, this isn't a spin-off, this is meant to be DK's big comeback. I'm not saying I like it, or want it to be this way, but I mean.... I see little to no evidence on the contrary

The game is massively elevated by the mod that lets you swap kongs on the fly so you don't have to do a bunch of pointless backtracking.

Hot take but I really just don't think Donkey Kong has the cultural staying power to be a mascot like Mario in 2025. Kinda like Superman he's dated and inseparable from the past. Whereas Mario is like Batman in that he always adapts to the current times.

64's level design is terrible even beyond the kong swapping and bananas. Banjo Kazooie and Tooie both have relatively open worlds with lots to explore, DK64's worlds are a bunch of hallways with small rooms placed around. There is little flow or cohesion, it sucks.

You're saddled with an annoying fully voiced female who doesn't shut the fuck up throughout the game. That's inching dangerously close to Sony exclusive territory.
