If you're up against a monster with unearthly physical traits, you can still beat it with weapons, tools and smarts.
If you're up against some metaphysical, 'in your head' shit, you can beat em by will of mind.
Ofc theres a should be a push pull for the horror effect. I find most games that try adhere to the metaphysical enemy often don't offer any entertaining gameplay to fight against the "horror'. Then again I'm a dude and I once banished entities haunting me by shadow boxing them for hours in the dark. Not to say all horror has to be action survival, but calling out hide and seek and walking simulators for being horror slop.
