Tidus definitely knocks points off from the game. I don't know why some people like him. I always hated him even though I liked the world and other characters. I'm playing FF9 for the first time now and I regret skipping it to wait for a PS2 FF. Zidane is a way better attempt at an outgoing character, assuming they were trying to take a break from the more stoic Cloud and Squall. Zidane actually acted like a person and Tidus acted like a jackass.

Zidane's problem is that the other main cast members get way better development than he does. His feels half-baked compared to the arcs of Steiner, Vivi, and Garnet. Tidus actually comes around pretty nicely by the game's end.
