I refuse to use consumables thinking i will need to use them later and finish the game with 6 trillion consumables in my inventory. How do i break this habit?

>using a consumable wastes your turn
It's like they want me to keep them in my inventory for forever

if you can use them
you are now forced to use them or forced to use them within the level you get the item
Anonymous No.715759147 [Report]
Use them as soon as you get them, even if you don't need them and they are of no use at the time. RP a potion addict until you die or go cold turkey.

There should be a game where the enemies get exponentially tougher the more consumables you have in your inventory after a certain treshold. You would also get a worse ending if you still have them after the final boss.

Say "fuck it, I'm not going to use them anyway" and use them whenever.
Thief solved this problem a while ago by nuking your inventory from level to level. I think Heretic did something similar. You're going to lose them either way, may as well use it.

I think the problem is that I don't want to rely on something I know I can't get readily in the future or is going to cost a fortune - like I had zero problems using potions in Diablo because I know I can just get more. But most games want their consumables to be meaningful, despite them generally not even being good, so you get locked into that mental stalemate.

for that one moment I might need one to boost stats

i usually sell off most of them for cash and keep 2 or 3 in case i might need them

I'm going to be honest, I don't think I've ever truly regretted using a consumable. There has been a time or two when in hindsight, I could've been more effective - but it's never been what I would consider a waste.

I’m actually a huge consumablefag and typical use them in all the games I play but especially in souls likes. The problem with most consumables is that the incentive structure for using them is extremely gay which makes wanting to play test them seem like a waste of time.

>Consumable that only last 20 seconds
>Consumable must be crafted
>If you die while the consumable is still active you just lose it
>If you get his during the consumable animation you lose it without getting it’s effects
>Consumable has limited quantities so you’re scared you’ll never come across it again
>Vague item descriptions doesn’t really tell you how the consumable works
>Consumable is only effective when you’re min max stacking buffs in some how to kill X boss in under a minute.

Realize that those consumables will never be significant enough to make a difference in a tough battle. familiarize yourself with consumables that are exceptional and keep those on hand if you like, but the items that you receive a surplus of dont need to be hoarded. Your problem isn't that complicated. Now indifference to consumables, or forgetting they exist altogether is another matter entirely.

same, they tend to pile up over time though and net a decent amount of cash when sold
the true test of mettle is whether you are willing to sell those hp and mana potions. I've learned that in fallout I am probably hoarding atleast 10k caps worth of stimpaks i'll never need at any given moment

Tend to use at least one as soon as you get one. Most consumables are useless, healing items are a big exception

Damage and death isn't punished properly, hence you can heal in the menu in the overworld or you'll get full healing after each fight. Lame.
Anonymous No.715780027 [Report]
>>715778271
Based post. Games need to stop handing out get-out-of-jail-free cards like candy. Menu healing and full HP resets after every fight completely gut any sense of tension or survival. Might as well just slap a big neon “We’re afraid of you dying” sign on the HUD. Bring back games that respect your time by wasting it with actual consequences.

>How do i break this habit?
Do a new playthrough that uses consumables almost exclusively
Basically a dude who chucks at his enemies anything damaging he has in his inventory and is throwable, while also using any beneficial consumable on himself
That helped me get rid of the hoarder habit
Anonymous No.715780334 [Report]
>use consumable
>take less damage
>need less healing and spend less mana because fight goes faster
>can go further now with less levels and grinding
You are throwing away damage you are throwing away stat boosts you are severely limiting the number of ways you can mitigate what enemies can do to you. Spend spend spend they are resources they are meant to be USED like you’re mother

I've never had a problem with consumables, instead i always hoard currency. In most games you can loot better shit for free than can be purchased, you can often craft your own potions and shit now so never spend any money on that.

I think the only time i actually spend money is buying smiting materials in skyrim coz levelling that skill gives you cancer-aids
