I have never played a single game with a skill tree, how do you keep stumbling into such garbage?

Seriously the skill trees devs have been making as of lately are a complete bastardization/flanderization of the concept. There is no fun in skill trees if I am choosing between +2% max health or +0.5% mana regeneration for every 10% of my health missing.

skill trees are only good if it's extra stuff you don't need

Skill trees are fun when it is active skills which you use rather than a bunch of passives. A bunch of passive skills rarely change the way you play, just has the goal to enhance it.

This is far from a new problem, go back and play WoW Vanilla and there's so many boring "1% more damage to Shadowbolt" talents. This is obviously for the sake of balance, but it's very boring. They can't be assed to make sure everything is roughly equal in power so they make all your choices meaninglessly weak.

I don't, I love good skill trees
Do you seriously think epoch's skill talents are a bad system

if you were actually smart you'd solve real optimization problems, not circle-clicker-5000 "cow goes moo" simulator with an extremely limited number of viable solutions
you are the literal definition of a midwit

Smart people like to relax too, not everyone wants to be using 100% of their brain power all the time. An RPG with mild number crunching is relaxing to a smart person. You want the numbers removed because it's too taxing on your brain.

but anon, dont you want to Play It Your Way with Choices and Near Infinite Combinations??

I'm glad people are finally realizing skill trees are libertarian trash and take away class identity, a critical part of immersion while also actually restricting play diversity by encouraging people to play one of a few optimized builds instead of being free to approach each class as a new game in itself. you can have wildly different mechanics with different classes.

and what do the pro skilltreeites claim when you point out the limiting problems with skill trees? they say that is your problem, and that in a game you should not try to play the mechanics you are given well but deliberately make bad builds for diversity. this victim blaming is the same kind of logic as the belief in voting with your wallet.
freedom indeed ain't free. it restricts you more than you know. having 5 or 6 distinct rigid classes provides far more ways to play the typical game than any number of skills and points ever could. limitations flesh out and define the world and make you truly free, otherwise there is no meaning to start with

Diablo 2 had a fun skill tree.

>passive abilities have massive results immediately
>active abilities immediately let you have new cool shit to fuck with
