Sell me on this, as somebody who loves combining different powers to solve interesting challenges, and backtracking that tasks you with mentally mapping an entire area, but isnt so tedious and superficial that the there are too many steps to backtracking for how simple what youre ultimately doing is (Use green ability on green door for example).

Somebody I somewhat respect as intelligent said that this game is actually really good and misunderstood, and with seeing how easy and braindead the new DK looks I thought maybe it could be interesting.

You strike me as a mitwit, so don't bother with it.
You could have had the game up, running, and playing with 5 minutes of minimal work then judge for yourself.
Instead you run to your local Mongolian basket weaving forum and ask to be spoonfed other peoples opinions so you can co-opt them as your own.
Glad your friend has decent taste and actually plays his fucking games.

Fuck you.

Remember playing this long time ago, at times I was like *grunt* i have to switch to a different kong to progress, it was mindly annoying because it was a combination of backtracking, changing to a kong you like less, and probably playing a new minigame as them

genuine issues with the game
>due to how the game manages lag some timed minigames can be dramatically harder or even borderline impossible if you try to play lag-agnostic, and are more easily cleared by being aware of lag management and actively using lag reduction strats. the most notable example of this is mechfish, which is insanely difficuly if you constantly stay in first person aim and stare at the fan, and is outright impossible to clear in the time limit if you use sniper scope
>doing sections of the game out of order or failing to fully clear an area at the time you are intended to clear it can lead to enormous amounts of tedious backtracking; areas of importance are generally well marked with colored bananas and coins to indicate which kongs need to go where on first visits, but in return visits when these obvious markers have already been collected it becomes much more difficult to determine which kongs should be used in which areas
>beaver bother

play with the mod that allows you to switch characters anywhere, that alleviates a lot of the frustration/padding. outside of that, the game is OK but the minigames are really terrible/not fun and a lot of the game just feels repetitive.

What makes 64 so good? Now vague circular answers like "Its just fun!" cmon man trying to have an actual videogame discussion on this shit board for once.

I liked how the n64 cartridge was yellow. It made it feel special and awesome. Honestly, other than the cringe as fuck Arcade section where you had to beat that garbage twice, there was honestly nothing wrong with this game. It was only ruined because they put that dumb Arcade crap that no one likes

they really should have done the babbling voices thing from kazooie/tooie, and fleshed out the different kong's interactions with that sort of dialog
i may be wrong but i don't think the kongs talk at all after you find them in their cage to rescue them
all the dialog in the game is just cranky or the parrot giving you a long monologue and then it just shows your current kong's silent reaction to whatever was just said

The biggest problem with the character switching in tooie I think is that the characters while unlocked new abilities, they actually became simpler when seperated, but the level design isnt strong enough to make the deficiencies strong enough.

For example. Without Kazooie. Banjo can hop around in his backpack, and while this is a new interaction to avoid hazards like thorns or something. It doesnt actually add anything but an extra step, because Banjo is going to get to the thorns anyways. He just might have to take another route to do so. But route taking in the games isnt even that interesting or engaging because once youve unlocked all the teleport pads, you can already cheat obstacles banjo alone might not be able to deal with somewhat by teleporting around.

If obstacles while seperated were more like puzzles where you had to creatively utilize ALL or even just some of Banjos moveset to solve a problem then it could have been interesting, instead, youre often just taking another more tedious and no less simple path than the path you would naturally take, except that path feels roundabout.

So the gameplay never feels like it justifies that length with any sort of increased challenge or obstacle that engages mechanically or intelligently.

I think the only exception is arguably minigames, but I dont even remember how many minigames were banjo or kazooie exclusive. And besides the minigames in the game suck not only because theyre all variations of "shoot at or collect specific coloured things" but also because of the obnoxious way the reticle works in these games where it snaps back to the middle of the screen if you dont hold it in a certain direction.
