I found it by a string of coincidences basically. I got into the studio's manga, Final Re:Quest which they then made an anime of and I think are trying to make a game? So I followed them on twitter, and they posted this game out of nowhere so I bought it on impulse.

Paraphrased a bit.
The laser hitbox starts immediately in front of you when you start shooting
It then extends to the left, the further away the laser travels (probably until it hits the right of the screen, I think)
In this case, the closer you are to the left of the screen, the more the laser travels to the right (as seen on screen 3)

Any reccomendations for arcade sticks? I don't care about fighting games, i just a good, affordable stick to play shmups and other types of arcade games.

Get one that's big enough to sit comfortably on your lap and that has enough space for your hands.
Everything else is irrelevant.
Get a used one first because chances are, you're gonna get frustrated after about 30 minutes and never touch it again.

Just watch the pic. It's about the hitbox of the laser in Gradius.
At first, the laser doesn't cover you at all.
As you keep holding the button, the hitbox extends enough to cover half of your ship
Then it's all the way behind you as well.
