How the SH fanbase tells it:
>Each Sh game was an artistic revolutionary marvel, each getting better than the last
>Then out of nowhere, evil old Konami disbanded the team of geniuses that were Team Silent, and then outsourced the series to idiot westerners who didn't get it
The reality:
>SH1 was a suprise success so Konami put a lot of resources and advertisement into its sequel
>Sh2 underperformed, selling 1-2 million copies at most
>This led to Konami cutting resources, having them rush out SH3 and SH4 at once
>those games also underperformed, so they disbanded Team Silent
>Then it was handed to westerners, who were in love with SH2 and tried to emulate it for a decade (eventhough that game under performed)
>those games also underperformed, so Konami just killed the series
>Kojima tried to revive the series with PT but overspent and konami killed the entire division
>Konami remade SH2 since the western fans love it so much
Conclusion:
The real story is that the sequel didn't land, so the real blame lies in Team Silent themselves. While not blameless, the western devs were like the rest of the SH fanbase in love with SH2, when that was the game that killed the series' momentum to begin with. Rather than the "perfect" game the fans championed, it was the reason for its downfall!
If you pick a game that didn't sell well, and had niche appeal as your model, is it any wonder that Homecoming and Downpour failed to sell as well?
