There is literally no reason for any modern game not to have a map

nah, it trivializes exploration. just use what you have, you don't need to find every item. you don't need to explore every single inch of the map.

Good level design by the game dev + basic orientation skills by the user = no map needed.
Unfortunately in 2025, these are unrealistic expectations to have for both sides.

Dark Souls is literally the ONLY game I've played that really does not need a map. And I'm completely retarded when it comes to sense of direction. I've been lost in my own neighborhood.

Minimaps are lazy shit pushed by companies that skip out on actually making use of proper landmarks, framing, directions, geography and logic.
Diegetic map or bust, total minimap death.
I want the map to just flat out give up and scrawl some bullshit like "here be monsters" in the blank parts.

There is literally no reason for PC games not to have completely rebindable keys. Seriously. Whenever I play a game with bindable keys, but there is just one or two menu actions that are arbitrarily hard keyed while everything else is not, I begin to lose my fucking mind.

There's just some things I refuse to use in every game. Even when you can rebind everything when a game has TOO many buttons for TOO many different things it's just not enjoyable to use/memorize all of them. You'd need extra fingers or the appendages of a necromorph

I unironically couldn't tell you where anything in Novigrad in witcher 3 is. I just keep looking at the minimap. It may sound like a me problem, but I know none of you could draw a map from memory either, while you could probably draw a perfect map including item and enemy placement of dark souls.

That's not a problem with the map, that's because of the fact objectives give you a GPS line to follow

Unironically yes. Miles better than the crime against UI that is Sekiro, where you must go to a menu practically every time you want to slot something in, even in situations where it makes no sense even on controllers.

pro hud in botw is great because you stop staring at the map all the time
good level design doesn't need a map for the player to keep staring at, or at least make a simple map that still forces the player to interact with the actual game

Kingdom Coom hardcore mode has it figured out perfectly, give the player the big world map but no minimap
It doesn't have a player marker either but I guess you could optionally enable that for casuals

if (you) get lost in dark souls 1 of all games you shouldn't play the game to begin with. Part of the fun is exploring and making a mental map of the entire game and how areas connect with each other.

It's good to have a map (preferably stylized rather than exact 1:1 "satellite image") that's opening in a full screen, shows locations of most important landmarks and doesn't show your location.
Minimaps however is a "cheat" for developers. They need to design levels that do not require minimaps to explore and navigate comfortably instead of just slapping minimaps and celebrating job well done.
