Personally, I think Bonanza builds on Odyssey's formula splendidly. The new moveset and greater player freedom are a much better fit for the collectathon genre than Mario's precision moveset was. It feels natural too; DK's last 3D game was also the Rareware's great collectathon. This is what 3D DK should be.

But on a gameplay level? Fundamentally this is Odyssey 2. The structure of the game is the same. If you hated Odyssey I would warn you away from this game.

I mean this in a gameplay sense and not a graphical one: it has the heart and soul of a PS2 action-adventure game. Platforming was more popular than shoulder-shooting in that era, so that meant more environmental puzzles, melee combat, and focus on movement puzzles. Bananza is a game in that spirit.

Watching one of those videos, it appears that the guy just runs directly to the objectives, doesn’t grab any collectibles, and only grabs bananas when they are directly in front of him.
I’m not some 100% completionist, but I’m still just dicking around on the first actual level after about two hours.

That is the case, yes. This is just part of the Nintendo design philosophy now. They have grappled for years with the question of how to reach different kinds of players with one game. I started today and played like 3 hours or so and I'm only just now leaving the Lagoon area (the first full level). Not even going for 100% yet either, just whatever I can find that looks interesting.

It's just fun as fuck to be able to climb anywhere you want and smash anything you want, and find secrets and stuff. Some of the 3-banan challenges are tricky too, I had to experiment a bunch and use a lot of balloons before I figured out where the final banan was.
