I played it like 10 years ago, it was great despite looking like a chinese copycat of WoW, the leveling system is the best I've experienced in MMOs and the world raids were incredibly fun left just before HoT released and apparently it took a nosedive after that.

Its not perfect but its arguably the best Actual MMO on the market.
As its the only one right now that is not just Funneling players in to the latest content as it actually makes almost all content relevant.
It was really great to be able to join a 5+ year old map and find a full party doing the maps major event.

I don't blame you for thinking that, most of the time you are correct that its spammy no-skill bullshit. I've been out of the game for too many years now so the meta is surely different from what I knew, but skilled guild groups could be absolute beasts in wvw with lots of skill expression being possible. Like, 10 good people taking on 50 randoms and not losing a person. Seeing this in action is what kept me playing gw2 as long as I did because I wanted to learn just how the fuck that was possible. And I eventually did find a sweaty guild I ran with for a time and had tons of fun stomping groups while being outnumbered. There is far more skill expression in wvw than you would assume, if you haven't played it extensively. Again, I don't know how the game has changed since I played (when the first xpac released) but I can't imagine its much different with how slow anet always was with balance and meta shifts.

Pros: It had good gameplay. The mounts feel great. They removed the holy trinity of MMO's which worked great for PvP. The exploration, music, atmosphere, and world events were all genuinely good.
Cons: The playerbase is full of sociopathic troon bullies. The story is absolute dogshit. They pissed off the fans of the first game before the word go by killing off the major human faction offscreen. The main story is a forced tale about fairy ents that the writer had been trying to get off the ground for years before finally using GW2 as a vehicle for her fanfic. The dungeons are bad. PvP doesn't get any updates. After the main story was finished they started killing off all the OG characters to tell a story about GW2's version of the Burger King Kid's Club, mockingly called "Diversity's Edge". It's tumblr-tier writing. The cash shop is egregious, you have to pay for bank tabs and inventory slots which are completely necessary in the late game as your inventory fills up with junk fast. You have to pay for episodic updates to the story called "living story" to progress the game. Living story is laughably bad and has poorly designed gameplay. Can't skip story segments because you have to click through dialogue boxes. It's full of dailies with way too many different currencies and that's all anyone does (logging in at sever reset to form a chain of daily completion groups). The end game gear treadmill is monotonous, tedious and boring. If you missed out on some segments of the living story (Scarlet Briar) they are discontinued and you can't experience them.
Recommendation: Play it for free, explore the world, check out the beautiful vistas, participate in the map events. This is where the good content is. Check out the PvP if only as a dead example of how good it could have been. Avoid interacting with the playerbase, don't buy anything. Don't buy GW3.

It had the most fun open world when I played it. The story was mostly garbage but running around was fun to do and their events were timed so you always had a place to go to do something.

The problem I had with it is that every time they balanced the game they nerfed builds that were fun to play in the open world. I had a Condi Herald with Torment, and if you had Runes of Torment you could heal yourself which gave you good survival against open world bosses, especially during off hours where you might not have many people on in the area you're at. After they did that with about 4 of the builds I had, I stopped playing, which was about 2 or 3 expansions ago?
