well in diablo2 barb class is very gear depended, this is why many people consider it the worst class but once he starts rolling into his son goku arc he becomes unstoppable no matter if magic find/gold find or even pvp but he needs gear

melee always has a massive disadvantage to ranged unless the devs are great at game design and go out of their way to make it otherwise, or just cripple the shit out of any ranged option like in ff15

melee is always in harms way and can be kited by ranged, enemies are often given bullshit melee abilities on the justification that you should be able to avoid them (i.e. diablo 2 black deaths being able to permanently steal a point of max health, half of the lategame and even midgame caves of qud enemies being able to save-or-die or outright instakill you, etc)

You're either overpowered as shit or complete garbage. There's rarely an inbetween. Going into melee is simply more dangerous than blasting niggas at range. Unless the devs turn you into a walking indestructible fortress, but at that point there's hardly a point in playing.

this, if enemies in your game are primarily melee and actually threatening then by default melee is just going to be a more dangerous playstyle. melee characters generally need free stats somewhere because they are going to need to care more about defense and need to build around it. in a game where enemies are designed around max damage output a melee that is splitting investment in survivability and offense is ALSO going to kill slower and as such be in even more danger.

its why melee characters often need more support, better gear, higher levels etc. D2 in particular gets super lethal towards the higher end and this means melee characters just need way better gear to succeed compared to characters that can kite and spam abilities.

You need an absurd amount of gear to do what others can do naked, while still being riskier than other classes because you need to run in and facetank shit (playing barbarian on hardcore lol)

Maybe they could have increased the damage of melee weapons, or made defense more worthwhile. Stuff only melee characters care about
