Anons, how do you cope? I have several projects I work on, but I never finish anything. Always that gut feeling I was supposed to be something more. Even if I did finish, my niche shit more than likely wouldn't replace even a McDonalds job. If I could even profit to begin with.

I'm happy for Gabe because he's one of the few millionaire+ people I think absolutely earned it. I just wish I could have 1/100th his success story.

The guy was a code monkey who started his own company. Nearly going under until the release of Half-Life. Then went into their own pockets for the developement of Half-Life 2. Created Steam which put PC to the top of the market, and giving PC gamers the respect we deserve. If it had not been for him and Steam, we probably wouldn't even get a tenth of the releases. He aggregated us, and brought new ones in.

Hate the guy because he's rich, sure, but be honest with your argument. The man has done a lot, and cares about the PC player more than any other rich fuck out there.

You didn't have to, because back then having a degree clearly meant you were qualified. You figured out everything yourself without the internet, and it was way more complex because it was all low level.

Programming was piss easy back then, Half Life was written in cpp just like win95. Both used a single language, no bullshit attached. Meanwhile current iteration of steam amalgamation of different languages, APIs etc etc. Back when Gabe actually programmed shit the concept of agile, full stack etc etc didn't even exist, his job was simple and extremely straightforward.

He couldn't hack it in today's world. Well, maybe he could since he went to Harvard but he'd never be successful. His claim to fame is being first in a uncompetitive industry before internet and remote work existed. He's a boomer, by all metrics he should at least be a multi-millionaire given his family background but instead he's a billionaire. If he was so fucking great and hardworking he'd run a semiconductor company instead

A lot of your points are indeed true, but your dismissal of his achievements as easy-peasy-anybody-could-have done-it attitude reveals a lot.

The success of Steam would not have occurred without the success and high quality of Half-Life and subsequently Half-Life 2. It is a series of perfectly timed events. The amount of care and effort that went into both HL1 and HL2 allowed the successful launch of Steam (as thats why people installed it). The amount of features and convenience from Steam lead the shift from piracy, and brought in more PC gamers than ever. Also allowing a lot of indie devs to be successful without shitty predatory publishers.

What he accomplished was a Napoleon conquest that started with gaining lots of admiration and respect. It was not something anybody could pull off even if they had the knowledge from today.

Gabe Newell is a scammer and belongs in federal prison for fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

Yes he does.

In March 2018, Gabe Newell held a presentation on Artifact claiming there would be regular expansions, an eventual mobile release, and a $1 million tournament, all of which ultimately failed to materialize.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=mERhtoD21rU

In August of that year, Gabe Newell repeated the claim of an Artifact tournament during the opening of The International: https://youtube.com/watch?v=X4xYOmUwad0

In March 30, 2020, Valve announced Artifact Beta 2.0, stating they planned for a closed beta (which happened), transitioning to an open beta and later full release (which didn’t).

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/583950/view/2102558993190369210

In December 17, 2020, Valve stated they would allow users to invite friends to the Artifact 2.0 beta in January.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1269260/view/2951510987408670526

In March 4, 2021, Valve formally abandoned Artifact. No expansions, no mobile version, no million-dollar tournament, not even something as basic as allowing users to invite friends to the beta in January like they said they would.

>What he accomplished was a Napoleon conquest that started with gaining lots of admiration and respect. It was not something anybody could pull off even if they had the knowledge from today
I'm going to just argue that what he did was ultimately irrelevant and that proliferation of PC gaming was ultimately based on hardware and not software. A lot of zoomers don't remember how bad PC gaming used to be, when Oblivion came out in 2006~ the top of the line computers barely achieved 20-30 FPS while Xbox 360 reliably hit that benchmark for the fraction of the price. What's more the online aspect of Steam was fulfilled by other products, without steam you could still play video games online with other people and it took a long ass time for digital sales to overtake physical discs. After all you used to get a disc and a steam code in a box. Another thing is that PC games were already popular, the concept of PC gaming being non-existent is extremely American as PC gaming had been around since forever in Europe.

We see mobile outgrow PC and console markets.Well how the fuck do we go from people hating n-gage to loving Genshin? It's not the games, it's the hardware. Hardware is what makes platform popular, not how you buy games. Steam rode the hardware wave and secured a monopoly on gaming because for the longest time nobody put out a competing product, nothing more.

Total horseshit. Vibe coders can make video games now. The tools and hardware are what's complex but game dev is glorified lego. Carmack had to do 3D on a chip that wasn't even designed for floating point units. You'd be lucky to find anyone working in game dev today who knows how to work close to the silicon.

Artifact is not gay. It is excellent. Artifact’s expansions on Dota 2’s setting and lore were amazing. Peak soul. There were times I actually felt like I was commanding the epic fantasy battlefield the cards depicted. I’d never had that feeling from a card game before, not even Magic.

When I looked at the menu, saw Jolixia’s caravan in the distance at night while the music took me, for a fleeting moment it felt like I was home.

Gabe Newell unironically started the ball rolling for the collapse of social bonds between young people. The male loneliness epidemic? Thank Gaben for that one. Midnight releases for games at GameStop and other places where you found friends? Mostly died down thanks to Gaben. Digital distribution for games was a mistake and now we can't go back. The butterfly effect started by Gaben has brought western civilization into the stages of its downfall. Kids aren't going outside anymore because Steam and other platforms that were inspired by it have now "fulfilled their needs". No wonder zoomers have terrible social skills.

This is all putting aside the other massive issue: Gaben started the trend of people no longer owning the games you buy. What do you think is gonna happen if someone else takes over Valve and makes it public? Now all your games are held behind a subscription or something worse. Wouldn't have happened with physical games you actually owned. Valve made things too convenient. Too much convenience erodes us all. Now the corporations have stolen the very concept of owning a game. If that was Gaben's intent from the start, he is a truly evil human being who deserves prison time.

It's piss easy now because game engines are made nowadays to be artist friendly.
>Meanwhile current iteration of steam amalgamation of different languages, APIs etc etc
And that's great for you because you only need to use one language, with someone else's work! They spent tens of millions to make it easier for the layman to use.
>concept of agile, full stack etc
Yeah... project management sure is harder than finding solutions to unsolved 3d graphics problems.
>Well, maybe he could since he went to Harvard but he'd never be successful
Colleges back then were an IQ test. Nowadays the average IQ of a college graduate is 102, basically the average person. Anyone can do it especially with federally backed loans. That's why your degree means nothing.

it was messaging like MSN/Myspace/Aim/SMS that started the ball rolling on loneliness, it was inevitable though, someone was gonna make sending messages over a network a thing one way or another.
which you could argue: someone was gonna make telephones more convenient by inventing the internet one way or another.
I dont think you can really blame a single person for any of that.

NTA but according to every company I've worked at they still haven't figured this out.
programming is the easiest part of my job, Agile "rituals" and "linking up" and "getting on the same page" take up the vast majority of my time.

That's true, however it's way harder to create successful games due to increased competition. The lack of barriers of entry makes succeeding harder, not easier.

>And that's great for you because you only need to use one language, with someone else's work! They spent tens of millions to make it easier for the layman to use
And they spent millions to make cpp work.... Point is that the current tech stack now is has more depth and breadth than 40 years ago. Here's a real life example, if you wanted to learn C in college you'd read the same books Gabe did, you'd do the same exercises and more.
>Yeah... project management sure is harder than finding solutions to unsolved 3d graphics problems.
But 3D rendering was a mature technology when Half life came out, he didn't have to solve "unsolved" problems, first voodoo card came out in 1996 and PS1 released in 1994. It was cutting edge but again, that's just hardware. Technology and math behind it was textbook material.

>Colleges back then were an IQ test. Nowadays the average IQ of a college graduate is 102, basically the average person. Anyone can do it especially with federally backed loans. That's why your degree means nothing.
It's way harder to get into Harvard now than during Gabe's time kek, just goes to show how of ignorant you are. Oh sure, you can go to some shithole community college or Hustlers but to get into Harvard you're competing against chinks and jeets who study 24/7

>That's true,
False, wrong. Game engines are content manager system, which means they have preconfigured settings and things you are able to do, limiting what you are able to do, in the process, ruining video game creativity since they corral devs into the content that was made for that content manager system. It makes it increasingly hard to make good games. Do you see any new good games despite how "easy" it is to create games? No there are less than before, because before the devs didn't have to deal with the engine's pre configured restrictions. It's even part of the reason why female models are so ugly, because UE5 default female model is made to be ugly and that affects games made with that slop. You can't really escape this problem if you are using a content manager system, you trade convenience for art and expression.

I can just google solutions to college assignments. it's especially easy to find answers to decades old questions.

Yes a lot of it is just implementing research papers, but it's not going to magically run at 60fps on current hardware.
