This. The PS3 fucked up BADLY on so many levels that it allowed Xbox to get away with heinous shit:
>Paid subscription
>Overheating shitbox console
>Allowed Xbox to be a direct competitor to PlayStation despite the PS2 being the best selling console of all time

Too bad times change and Microsoft fucked up with the Xbox One. What was going on through their retarded minds by having it have at a higher initial price and that game sharing controversy? Did they learn nothing from watching Sony make those mistakes? I swear executives are fucking retarded and out of touch

By allowing you to send your console in for repair and get a new one free
Anonymous
7/19/2025, 4:43:53 AM No.715851849
>>715851046 (OP)
I think people were just desperate for the new generation at that point and 360 having online mp for consoles helped a lot to not fully sour people on the console. People also were waiting for Halo 3 so that is yet another thing that helped them a ton. Then once COD, Halo and Gears solidified themselves as the mp dudebro shooters to play it kept the 360 afloat rather than making the brand crash. MS wisely also offered free repairs since the RROD issue was far too big for them to ignore.

Prior to this the OG Xbox had a good following of the dudebro audience thanks to Halo 1 and 2. Sony released a console that at the time was deemed way too expensive. Nintendo went all in on family child friendly Wii. Microsoft lucked out big time with a variety of factors playing to their favor despite the blunder. As we saw though with the One their luck wasn't going to last forever.

jesus fucking christ.

Anyways I only mention this because I had 2 RROD with Xbox 360s. First happened in 2006. Second was my Halo 3 edition Xbox 360 which I sent into Microsoft to repair for free and I think they did fix it. I think it actually might have had a RROD again after the repair too and then I threw it out since by then I had long since switched to PC gaming.

Basically sending you a brand new Xbox no questions asked. I got RROD'd like 2 separate times and all I had to do was notify Xbox, they sent you a box, put the dead xbox inside and ship it to them and you got a new Xbox 360. Didn't have to pay a single cent for shipping or anything.

Free repairs or returns. Unsurprisingly, when you treat your customers with respect and make it worth their time they want to stay. Also, Halo and COD. It's good customer service. Or at least pliable customer service. MS had not been jeeted yet so there were enough white men in positions of authority to give xbros a good deal. Also the 360 vs the PS3 is just a better deal than the current Xbox Series P (or whatever) vs a PS5. Sony had already blundered with the PS3's pricing, a mistake they haven't made since.

MS just gave a shit about gamers, honestly. It's not like today where the company is rapidly divesting from videogames, stagnating, and would exit immediately if a bunch of bad product made it to market.

The original NES had a pretty big hardware problem. After years of use, it was almost impossible to get the games to work because of the interior contacts bending over time. If you left a cartridge in the console all the time, it got worse much faster.

Handwaving it as if it didn't exist. Out of the 3 360s I owned, they replaced one but still charged me for shipping, the other two red rings were just bricked. PS3 had no games, so people had to rebuy 360s multiple times that generation. The same thing, however, was true for PS2 the previous generation - the failure rate was incredibly high, and they didn't replace shit or admit fault.

Then I got a second one some time later that was the falcon chip version and that lasted five years before it simply wouldn't turn on anymore.

The lead-free solder used in the 360 hadn't been thoroughly tested and would gradually change shape over time as it heated up and cooled off. This would lead to some components being pushed away from the board itself because of the extra space taken up by the solder. Eventually connections would weaken and then break, bricking the console.

RROD was a side effect of them rushing the console to market in order to get fist movers advantage which worked.
Outside of that it just had a solid lineup of games the best running versions of any multiplatform games, the best netcode (even if you had to pay for it), and its primary competitor that cost 500$ compared to it being 300$.

Once the later releases fixed the Red Ring issue it just became a incredibly sold piece of hardware that was only killed in the 11th hour by a decision to chase motion controls over making real games.

Mass Effect and Gears of War took 6 months to a year to hit PC, also not a time where timed exclusives was the norm and announced well in advance. You had little way of knowing how long it would stay exclusive.

What a lot of people forget too is that the PC market was plagued by really shitty ports at the time. Saints Row 2, GTA 4, The Force Unleashed and Dark Souls 1 are just a few that stand out in my mind. PS3 ports in those early years were also fucked. Borderlands 1, every Bethesda game had an issue where the game would self destruct if your save file had too much data, FEAR, Beyonetta, Splinter Cell Double Agent, all worse than their 360 counterparts. Those are just the ones I remember.

It was the cheaper, better console. RROD was covered by warranty.

They likely resold the refurbished ones cause it was a simple repair to a dump mistake. At the time the Xbox had the pro consumer image vs sony, and it was a western game system at a time Japanese games were struggling with HD.

Funny how 20 years later the PS3 tard is as ignorant as he was back in 2007. One thing I wish I could dig out were the youtube videos produced by butthurt PS3 fans when FFXIII was announced for XBOX 360 how shit it was a gold mine
