the first few hours are hallways, it opens up a bit and is good for like 10 hours after that. then it opens up too much and most of the stuff has too much health to be fun so you're just guessing and checking random fights to see if you can do them in a reasonable amount of time or not. then at the end everything is trivialized.
that middle 10 hours is good though

The problem is that the optional paths are too difficult to differentiate from the main ones. Without a minimap, it's a pain in the ass

Is the soundtrack supposed to be good right from the start? I've been watching gameplay and the music has been just the same three notes played on a guitar, then some woman singing very forgettable choir music. I hope it does more, it's gotten such an insane amount of hype.

Agreed. Same linearity, but XIII’s areas feel well designed, varied and are pleasant to look at. E33’s consistently look like the same mess with different color tones.

You're a fucking liar because half the combat themes don't have a single voice line or even guitar.

the difference is e33 actually rewards players for exploring, rather than just having a bunch of chests in camera shot while you enter the room

My friend with generic vidya taste who almost never plays turn-based rpg gravitated towards this one, which tells me that it's probably good but similarly overrated, unless you dig the style it goes for.

Ok zoomie, making it easier for your tiktok brain.
When FF7 released back in 1997 it made most western kids gravitate toward it besides them not being into turn based games. Most of them never even played a FF game before, which was already mainstream.
Does this fact make OG FF7 an overrated game?

E33 has a world map, minigame side areas, an actual town you can visit for updated sidequests as the game progresses, and doesn't spend the first 3 hours forcing you to regular attack and chug potions before it gives you the actual combat system

those are the reasons why ff13's hallways pissed people off, the same reason why people would rather piss in a proper toilet instead of an outhouse even if the end result is the same

well I stopped exploring in 13 after the first dungeon because all the useful items are just put in your direct path.

It's extremely linear
That being said, most of the battles are linear as well, so it kinda goes with it.

Exactly. I am having a ton of fun discovering things for myself and getting surprised. Game is LONG when playing this way though. I am 30 hours in and only just defeated the first Axon.

>Level design in scroller games
Most JRPGs are linear as fuck. And overworld, padding or post-game content. Level design in JRPGs is just another buzzword

The soundtrack is great but a bit overrated. I have orchestral music fatigue due to Soulsborne.
