Never even used Discord, I'm in this weird situation where I don't talk to anyone about my hobbies.

The majority of normies have been intentionally cordoned off into three apps and taught to be incurious about how their devices work so they'll never try to look further.
Among non-normies, there was a great schism, resulting in a radical 50/50 split in two opposite directions, half of them becoming literal actual members of the nazi party and the other half becoming uwu kawaii femfurs. These two groups self-isolate.
So, while you used to interact with the entire internet, you now interact with about 1% of it, not even 2% like it was before the schism.
It sucks, but what can be done? Can't get the normies back without ending capitalism, can't ever convince the schism to end because the two groups are basically the eloi and the morlocks at this point, totally incompatible species.

For me it feels smaller because it shifted from a good chunk of the userbase being contributors to now it all being lurkers or consumers.

major platforms get safe harbor provisions in the west but small or tiny websites don't, so if you have a small site where some dude says the gamer word, the site owner gets raided or at some point he gets sued for not adherring to the legal standards of the us, uk, eu, canada or australia. you basically already have to get a lawyer just for a blog with comments disabled, which in turn killed all creativity and reason for people to start websites

This. You can see this shift in modding in particular. Back then, "Modders" were the people who made mods for others or themselves. Nowadays, the word is used to describe the consumer of mods too. 99% of people just want to consume now and have no real sense of making anything themselves, because they can just hop back on youtube and lean back.
