I only ever played this game once without the dlc and thought it was really difficult but I did finish it. I still think the sectopods were really difficult even with hacking and grenades. I had the foresight to allow reloading and I was right because it constantly crashed.
Was there something I was missing with the difficulty, is the dlc good / help with the crashes, and does the game still crash a bunch after all these years?

I've played Xcom 2 a lot with hundreds of mods and I don't remember the game crashing
And yes War of The Chosen is very good, the rest of the DLCs not so much
I highly recommend trying it again because considering mods Xcom 2 is the most replayable tactical strategy ever

Jesus my last playthrough with the "better AI mod", run forward, 1st terror mission, activate assassin, two soldiers, one cap and one sectoid. one guy gets mind controlled, another gets dazed. nope, nope nope.
The mod is supposed to give pods bigger search zones and only move in reaction to close sound, but ends up just pooling them into the same area.

It tries to change the modern XCOM games and make them more like the original XCOM at least on the strategic layer, Long War does indeed indicate that a playthrough is long, much longer than the base game but everything is also a lot more in depth.

It's been almost 10 years now and no other SRPG has scratched the same itch for me. The learning curve is steep, but once you're there the level of build variety and strategies blows most other games in the genre out of the water. The campaign itself is highly customizable. I never play the vanilla length. The dynamic war second wave option significantly cuts the length down without ruining the balance.

long war is shit. it makes the already-tedious game much, much more so.
XCOM already doesn't have enough mechanical depth, stage variety, or progression to support its own runtime and long war just exacerbates that to a comical degree.
you have to have genuine aspergers to enjoy it, the kind where you don't blink an eye at spending 5,000 hours playing a single game.
