Demo Thread. I found an actual PC-98 game demo buried in the depths this time.

First I tried Thief's adventure but I wasn't really that into the mouse controls. It should be a controller game. maybe it is I didn't even really bother checking. oh well. pass.

Agents of Shadow got a few laughs out of me, like the disclaimer that advised me not to play the game while hypnotized, which I do not believe is a thing that can actually occur. I can't be hypnotized at all though, the guy at the circus told me to get off the stage when it didn't work on me that one time. whatever. Also the protagonist's wife told him not to bring cursed mirrors into their home and leave that stuff at the Paranormal FBI office, which was pretty reasonable, I think. Who brings cursed mirrors to your own house?
It's got some effort put into it so it's not a basic RPG maker game, but some areas are blatantly effortless like not having sprites match the character portraits. I think I'll pass on this one.

One Last Toast is actually out already. Seems it released it's demo in concert with the full release. A standard ResidentEvilLike. I might think of a word for those types of games. anyway. Sounds like it's the guy's first game and it's better than I think I could pull off on my first game attempt.
I enjoyed the duck hunt puzzle, where you find a NES cartridge and have to play Duck Hunt to get a key or something. HOWEVER, he did not include the laughing dog that appears when you lose?!?!?
It's only five dollars, I might pick it up.

Immortum didn't even run and crashed steam. I might give it another try on my dedicated gaming PC instead of the weaker mixed use PC. There might be others that need more power to run, I'll see at the end.

This game was called "You are a failed murderer" and when I tried to kill someone I got a game over, so I guess it lives up to it's promises. I don't really know what the point of this game is. pass.

Practically smashed that wishlist button when I saw PC98 but I played the demo out of due diligence. Pretty accurate replication, they actually went for including "examine every object in the room three times before something happens that lets you advance".
most modern games drop that requirement because it's "anti-gamer" or something. casuals.

See this one is postmodern adventures as the developer, which meant I didn't really have to play much of the demo. I'm already familiar with the guy's work, he makes solid point and click games.

this one seemed vaguely interesting, but the dialogue boxes clashed horribly with the art style and I wasn't sure if the dialogue was also really slow or if I was randomly advancing dialogue by smashing all the buttons until something happened. I tried my button mashing technique to use a key on a locked box but when that didn't work I pressed escape to check what the controls were and apparently pressing escape just ends the game altogether. I think I'll pass on this one.

another 1 bit puzzle game. it wasn't that interesting. I played one level. every step drops your oxygen by 1% and you have to open levers to chase this flame around. I was very dubious of the notion that anything with graphics like this could scare me somehow.

This one seemed worthwhile. You play as NYPD paranormal police something something inspector Rei. You can travel between dimensions or something sort of like in Silent Hill with it's two realities, but one is just grimmer and has more corrugated metal.

I guess this one is a maybe. It didn't seem that bad, but I like my survival horrors to be in abandoned facilities, not out in the jungle. That's one reason why Dino Crisis 1 is better than two. I'm not a fan in general of stuff like "war is secretly hell" and Jacob's Ladder and that sort of thing, but for people who are into that, I imagine they'd like this one quite a bit. But yeah. it's been done before and I didn't even like it that much the first time.

I generally play demos up until the time I die for the first time, which happened pretty darn quickly in this one because apparently the roof is full of nails that instakill you if you fly into them. Anyway that plot is apparently your children are missing. Mark this game down as another maybe.

>>715894378I see and acknowledge you typing out the generated nonsense correctly. Its more effort than went into creating that image.
Demo man have you tried the demo for Kaput Mortem? I thought that was cool when I tried it for the Next Fest.
>>715894565Well, no, but I did play Helltown by the same developers which was actually very scary at first, with it's freakishly tall nun that emerged from doors it clearly could not fit through.
The game really dropped off with it's dumb platforming puzzles later on which were not scary and just annoying so I abandoned it and got my money back. I guess I could try again with them, though.
>>715895272I mean from this demo there IS a french person you have to interact with, so that's kind of scary. The demo was pretty short but I liked the control system, reminded me of Trespasser or Black & White but in a horror context.

Actually, so this one here turned out to be pretty interesting. Might have found another diamond in the rough. You play as this blood spatter analysis guy, like in the forensics show and you can tell a lot about blood from how it forms you know.
your health bar is kind of related to puzzle solving, if you get them wrong you get "brain fog" which is basically, if you're acting like a dumbass, you will start to turn into one who slurs his speech and stumbles around like a neanderthal so you should answer things correctly. You can probably just save and reload if you get things wrong though.
It could be interesting to find out what happened in the house by looking at blood on the walls. wishlisted. oh and they clearly ripped the inventory off of RE4 but everyone does that
>>715895974>>715894378So I did get Phantom Playhouse working but I didn't bother playing the tutorial so first I died because I couldn't figure out the controls and they just jumpscared and killed me. the second time I sort of knew what buttons to push so I played the game console sitting in front of me, but I am really not sure what the point is because it was not really clear how playing the video game would help me escape the monsters jumping out at me.
but most critically of all, the game made an unforgivable heathen sinner design decision. the super nintendo in the game wasn't accurate. it wasn't accurate! it was inaccurate how is this allowed.

movie game. unskippable cutscene! I don't care about your monologue. also you managed to run poorly on my super powerful gaming only pc that I don't even have web browser installed on. that was a first.
And I played Caput Mortem it was good enough to get on the wishlist too.
That's all. 21 demos this time. it'll probably take a week for another group of demos to be worth playing gets released. I'm going to go have a bath. and make food. or something.
