First sword, as OPs gut has no meaningful defense score and I think it might make a cool effect when it explodes out between a couple of his vertebrae

Mechanically I don't understand which is stronger, so I'm going to try sword of the patriarch this playthrough.
It sounds cooler and abbreviates to SOTP which looks like STOP, as you would type it frantically and erroneously. That's funny to me.

It doesn't say "additional" anywhere, so the damage is likely split 50/50 rather than being added to base.

It's not an additional 50% it just deals 50% as magic retard ("is dealt as")

Now factor in the fact that realistically every enemy has *some* defense and magic defense stat and the only advantage of magic is against enemies that nullify phys damage

Split damage is always shit and piercing defense is always goated.

Make an argument for picking the first sword. Because I can't see one.

Defense ignore is universally good if we assume all enemies have some defense stat.

Additional magic damage gets shut down vs enemies that resist magic.

Depends on how defense works. Percentage based? Either one is fine, depending on the armor types the enemies utilize. In absolute numbers? Fuck 1 then, that shit's going to be fucking garbage.

If defense is percentage based doesn't that mean 2 has significant advantage? You can fight enemies way above your level since your attacks will still go through when otherwise they'd get nullified

Depends on the enemy but #2 seems more useful unless there are enemies outright immune to non-magical damage.

bottom is objectively better since it essentially does true damage, the emerald sword is still Susceptible to magic defense

Second one assuming I can add magic clause to my sword through a skill later on some kind of magic enchantment buff that turns my attacks magical due to elemental damage.

Top has to go through 2 different resistances so it's worse but it looks cooler so i'd take that one.

The second sword hurts enemies no matter what, so I'd go with that one.

"Ignores defense" is very vague - so unless OP clarifies that it only ignores *physical* defense, the second sword ignores 50% of *ALL* defense.

Why wouldn't you want a sword that no matter what does at least 50% damage? What if you encounter an enemy that ignores magic damage? Then 50% of your sword's power is gone by default - assuming the enemy doesn't also have conventional armor to absorb the physical damage you'd deal as well.

Sword #1 is worse all-around.
