64 is the only good one
Odyssey has good movement but poor objective design and too many cap gimmick stuff and minigames
Sunshine is unfinished, too linear, and fludd sucks. blue coins go without saying

"rank them" feels meaningless.
64 is the most ambitious and novel. It was revolutionary.
Sunshine has an unrivaled atmosphere. Isle Delfino is an incredible setting, and it's a shame the game is unfinished because the cohesion of the world was impressive.
Odyssey has the best gameplay by far. It's a refinement of everything fun about earlier entries, with tons of room for player expression.

Does that make any one better than the others? It just comes down to how you weigh these things.

3D World=Mario 64>3D Land>Super Mario Odyssey>Super Mario Sunshine>Super Mario Galaxy

Haven't played Galaxy 2

3D World has the best levels, 64 has the best movement.
Land has real depth perception with the 3D on and its insane that it doesn't get more credit for being the only 3D platformer where you're not just spacing your shadow on the platform below the character/instincts to jump.
Odyssey is fun but kinda simple.
Sunshine is actually mechanically really good its just getting through the actual finale (let alone 100%) are beyond painful.
Galaxy is an audio visual splendor but the "waggle the wiimote to lose your momentum and move up the 3 inches more you needed to get on top of this platform" spin attack has always felt awful and will always feel awful.

Don't know where to put Bowsers Fury just because of it's relatively small size compared to the rest of them

Yes, I'm aware of competitive speedrunning autism allowed by the depth of Mario 64's control scheme. That's why 3D World isn't going above it on my ranking it's tied with 64.

3D World has 96 levels and never stops introducing fresh twists on the game through the entire run. It's an absolute delight to play and gets quite challenging by the end. Top tier soundtrack, games pretty as hell, all the characters are fun to play, fun to play solo or multiplayer. It's level design peak bundled in a big happy package.

Most people complain about the simplistic control scheme but it's literally just how 2D Mario plays and it's not a bad thing for a Mario game to play like Mario especially when its not like sandbox Mario stopped happening, which was the original fear when 3D Land/World dropped

And none of them are fun. This is the era when nintendo really starts to back away from making real video games. 3D world has zero sauce on it, its so bland and boring. Modern nintendies really think a level a chimp could hammer its way through are satisfying if they have enough gimmicks in them, its just depressing.

Yeah there is, whats the point of 96 levels if not a single one is fun on replay. This goes back to nintendo games being designed to be consumed now, and why I now prefer indie platformers.
>its shit content but there's a lot of it!
Come on man, you're like right on the precipice of realizing something really important. I'm trying to make this really easy to understand.

If you're stupid and want to know if a game is good or not, just replay a level twice in a row and see if its still fun. Don't fall for this "video games as an interactive experience" slop.

i always found this distinction a bit arbitrary since its more of a gradient from 64 to 3D Land.
Sunshine is already heavily mission based with most shines and certain blue coins only being available when you select the respective shine.
From there on it just becomes progressively more level based from Galaxy to 2 and finally 3D Land/World.
In that sense, for me 3D Land/World are the only really separate ones, with Galaxy 2 being a bit of a hybrid with pretty much having 2D style level design but with conventional 3D Mario mechanics

Because there's not enough room for discovery and optimisation, the challenge isn't there. Games are meant to be won, not "experienced", and it should be fun to win them again and again better than you did last time. I really like learning and obtaining mastery, that's simply not there in modern Nintendo games. There's just a complete lack of genuine obstacles.

You fell for one of the classic blunders. Which is that the only gameplay that matters is hyper twitchy high level play. It's the exact horseshoe of narrativefagging and thinking something like TLOU is the only type of game that can exist because of it's deep and enriching story, and if a game isnt trying to engage you with a story like that, then it's a lesser product. When in reality Super Mario 64 is a deeply easy game, and it's actually the platforming challenges imposed by the self that are difficult.

It feels good to play Super Mario 3D World, it's level of challenge and control scheme is in line with the 2D games, lots of easy levels at the start, challenges in the back, and more emphasis on level design complexity (fresh mechanics constantly over the course of 96 levels instead of sandbox levels you return to) since the movement complexity is dialed back.

Your argument boils down to "Mario 3D World bad because it's 2D Mario" but 2D Mario is not bad.

tl;dr you're fucking retarded

I’m actually surprised to see such based takes. 64 has such great controls, but it takes a while to master. Odyssey gives you most of the same controls with a bigger playground. The hat is okay, but I dunno something about the whole game isn’t as fun. I could replay 64 indefinitely. It’s always such a challenge. Odyssey doesn’t feel the same. 64 is incredible, it's insane how well they did 3D platforming first try. It's a shame they won't do a re release ala OOT 64 but it's decompiled now so whatever.
Sunshine is a game I have a soft spot for but mostly aesthetically, the gameplay is only really great in the twilight zone challenges.
Odyssey does what sunshine tried and does it better but they never really let you use Mario's fill kit and it's super easy to just skip everything with the long hat jumps. If you just blast through it to credits I think it's really fun but it falls apart when you try to master the mechanics.

It's hard to say, all the ones I've played I enjoyed. But all of them were so long ago I couldn't give you a proper order.
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2
Super Mario World (gba)
Super Mario Bros 2 (gba)
Super Mario Bros 3 (gba)
Super Mario 64 (nds)
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Enjoyed all of them.

They're all good for different reasons
64 wins for levels
Sunshine wins simply because of the secret zones and being a well rounded game
Odyssey is the least impressive because it does everything but is good at nothing but still has some high notes.
64 = Galaxy 1&2
Sunshine
Odyssey

The collectibles in Odyssey are not worth it, imo. I don't think I'll ever do another run of that, but I will redo Sunshine and 64 over and over.

Just beat it and I disagree. It has plenty of variety but not a polished platforming experience.

>Which is that the only gameplay that matters is hyper twitchy high level play
He said replayable and he's right. This is the same exact rationale people used to make fun of Sony fags for. How the mighty have fallen.

Cubies arent nintenchads ; they are proto-snoys who, due to their shitty ass console flopping by focusing on moviegame shit like re4 and garbage like shitshine and shit waker, ruined the next generation of Nintendo into pandering to casualfags

I didn’t like odyssey, I never even finished it. People hyped up the donk city segment and even that was just “fine” so I quit shortly after. Way too many moons which doesn’t seem changed in the new DK game either.

Sunshine is my favorite one. However I recognize that is due in no small part to nostalgia. Therefore, broken down into categories:
>Movement
64
Odyssey
Sunshine
>Levels
Odyssey
64
Sunshine
>Vibes
Sunshine
64
Odyssey

Movement in Sunshine is constantly slowing you down, Odyssey has too many arbitrary limitations even though it should be the smoothest in the series with the most intuitive jump extensions ever, and 64 is only let down by the camera and then only sometimes. The levels in 64 are a really mixed bag, almost every level gimmick is repeated at least once and you have a lot of stars that are just out and out bullshit, but at least they're finished and the completionist quest isn't locked behind stuff that's glitchy or locked behind RNG. The vibes though, everything on GameCube was immaculate in this regard. There's nothing quite like playing a game from that era where the gameplay was starting to look like the cutscenes.

>Tight responsive yet easy to remember controls with challenging platform levels? Bad.
>Slow methodical weighty controls combined with a focus on button combo memorization and simple platforming? Good.

Huh. Guess we prefer difficulty in controls rather than the actual platform levels.
