Compile Heart and Idea Factory
What's your favorite game from them?
From any year or genre.

Not sure what happened, but the thread was going well so hopefully this is okay.
Is Death End Request worth trying out?

Only for the story, aesthetic and music which are all very unique. There's not much else around that will give you the same experience as the last arc of the game at all, that's a wild ride. The sequel too has a very good atmosphere.
The gameplay really just consists of pinballing enemies into walls and off each other. Fun at first, but gets old before the end comes.

Discounting Nep, Mary Skelter, followed by Mugen Souls and Moero Crystal.

i think it might've just been because their touhou game was in the OP and jannies HATE touhou i mean it's a bit obvious why if you step into any of those threads here but they even delete normal touhou threads so it's probably just a constant game of spite between the two.

I'm not kidding when I say Compile Heart are one of my favorite developers. Their entire shameless moe otaku aesthetic combined with plenty of ecchi fanservice and lovable characters (and I do mean lovable), all in a neat JRPG (my favorite genre) format is simply irresistible to me. But after 2020, their output dived off a cliff, and I hate how soulless and sanitized their modern offerings have become. I know the reason, but that doesn't make it any more disappointing. And considering the situation, there doesn't seem to be much hope of them course correcting. I'll probably get the next Neptunia mainline when it releases, but that may be the last thing I get from them.

The right strap is not visible in the reflection.
I don't recommend Omega Quintet of course, at most, the game has historic value because it was the first game developed by Compile Heart for PS4 but not much else. The music is amazing at least.

I plan to get it eventually. What's so bad about it? Keep in mind I've played a wide range of CH games and liked most of them, so I have high tolerance for jank if it's for the sake of cutesexy anime girls.

I've only really played DERQ2, which is weird given its a sequel but its more overt gothic horror tone is what caught my interest. Ended up loving Mai, Rottie and Liliana as characters. I've gotten around to playing some of DERQ1 and...eh. The conspiracy angle's neat and I do like Arata a lot, but it has little of what I loved about 2 - the setting and characters aren't doing all that much for me. Gameplay's more varied than 2 but whereas bugs made that game extremely exploitable, 1's difficulty feels like it's all over the goddamn place so it's not like I'm more enamored with it on that front as well. Maybe I'll finish it one day. But otherwise, I've heard Mary Skelter's good and I've not really been interested in anything else CH has made.

Generic characters that aren't very memorable (sure, a lot of games in general and not just Japanese games use tropes but even considering that tropes are archetypes are common in ficiton, Omega Quintet doesn't have a good cast that stands out), bad graphics even for a PS4 released in 2014 (Sonic Generations and Ni No Kuni look better), a complex or confusing turn-based combat system, unlikable protagonist (Takt) and also, in my experience it's possible to get stuck in the game because at one point you'll need to use a specific skill (skills you use during exploration) to remove an obstacle but the only way to increase your abilty level or the level of those skills is by completing specific quests (''show me a skill!'', those quests) and if you ignored those quests, well, you just won't be able to remove that obstacle and continue with the story...

It's not the worst game of all time, but I really consider it kind of bad, yeah.

Modern Compile Heart are holding back to a level they don't need to be.
All of this is in 2025 console games (well Dolls Nest isn't on console but it could be)
They can't 100% get back to where they were but they've dialed down to 0%.

From what I've seen of Dolls Nest it doesn't have any more fanservice than a modern Neptunia game.
There are still some risque designs in modern CH and Galapagos RPG games (e.g., Grey Sister), but what made Compile Heart stand out from the crowd was their frequent inclusion of ecchi mechanics and CGs such as rubbing minigames and clothing breaks, all including lolis as well. None of the games in your pic have anything comparable, and they couldn't because all four major platforms plus even GOG now forbid such content from releases. Fuck, Nintendo won't even let them have bikinis any more. I'm sure you saw what happened to Tokyo Clanpool. That wasn't even among their most risque offerings.

I'd still be okay buying modern CH games if they were still just cute with this level of fanservice but even newer Neps don't give you any extra costumes to get.
And to be honest their games just feel horrible compared to their golden age now. DERQ Z is the worst, least fun CH game I've ever played. Neptunia SVS reused dungeons at a much more extreme level than the mainline games and the combat felt worse too.

By the way, I finished Castle Panzers this year, I've reached a level in my JP studies where I could handle it easily. It really did feel unbelievable playing it on my PS4 after everything that's happened in all the years since. And it's hard to think that we'd ever get that level of fanservice back.
But even setting this level of ecchi aside modern CH makes it very difficult to be a fan of them.

This company is basically sunk with every platform turning down these games.
