I implemented functionality for actually switching characters finally:
https://streamable.com/3pwg32

It looks a bit janky, but it's a start. I also scrapped the exanimation for switching the extra GFX00 tiles and just do the DMA myself now, although it might still need some optimisation to avoid vblank overflow.

Anonymous No.715918349 [Report] >>715918604 >>715918654 >>715927515
>>715917903
The main limiting factor is character graphics, and especially trying to insert them after the hack is already done. In my original testing, the limit was 4 extra characters, so pic related is what I settled for. It's entirely possible that the game could be optimised to the point where you could fit more characters in, but I'm not going to try at this point.

Likely so the question mark wouldn't flip as the animation mirrors, or maybe in universe it's excited about parachuting. It turns into a question mark when it lands.
Anonymous No.715919448 [Report]
>>715919161
It's a tripfag. But mostly because the graphic needs to be symmetric, I assume.
Anonymous No.715919852 [Report]
>>715919161
Sprite mirroring. If I'd used a question mark, it would have flipped backwards when the Anon swung to the left. Furthermore, the level sprite is made up of only two tiles that are mirrored, so a question mark couldn't be drawn in the first place.
Here's the tilesheet, should hopefully make it a little more clear.

It’s a nod to it, I want to redo the whole boss from scratch since BM’s wasn’t accurate. Most of the code from mine was directly disassembled from RS2. It will be polished up much more for a more enjoyable/fun fight, but this is just a preview.

Romancing SaGa 2? And it works in SMB3? That's impressive. Will the collab be organized similar to the /v/orlds, i.e. claimsheets and the like?
Anonymous No.715924357 [Report] >>715925271
>>715923386
Yes, but I’ll be reserving Bowser’s Castle and the final boss for myself. Levels are arranged differently in SMB3, since they’re not tied to IDs like in SMW; you add/remove levels inside the respective tileset bank with my editor.

Thanks! I have not, I'm still operating on LM 3.30. I'm not so sure deleting vanilla levels would save that much space since /v/orld 3 is a full hack, and since most levels are made by different people I don't know how many common external resources could be shared either, but I might take a closer look.

What I am fairly certain of is that there are many exgfx pages that could be optimised, such as pages that are almost identical to vanilla graphics pages save for a single custom sprite. But again, I don't intend to try to add more characters at this stage and will instead focus on trying to complete what I have.

IIRC he's making a new editing program for SMB3, which I'm guessing will be as retard-proof as Lunar Magic is for SMW. I don't think there's ever been a VIP-style open collab for SMB3, so this should be something new and fresh.

glad to see he's still kicking with even lunar magic updates, i'll be honest in saying i've mainly lurked the /v/orld threads and barely touched lunar magic for any serious romhacking and still think ASM stuff like even classic hacks like brutal mario is fucking black magic put onto a ROM. every day it hurts more that it was never finished.

It might be the one of if not the first ever open collab SMB3 hack if we get it done.
It would give us a massive headstart if the host already did the heavy work for us like baking a final boss. I'm hoping for custom graphic support that's as easy as just drawing over assets in YYCHR or possibly even the tool itself as the host/coder teased it in a preview not long ago.
