>>715918139 (OP)>leftthe console fps that defined the core mechanics of what a twin stick fps should look and feel like. the control scheme set forth by this game is virtually identical to every other good-handling console fps after it. two guns, frags, control schemes set forth by devs for right and left handed gamers, and lastly a basic aiming system that is immediately intuitive to anyone (especially those not familiar with fps games). easily in the top 25 best games of all time, and top 5 most influential for better or worse.
>righttransitional, jump-to-3d title that came out a whole generation too late. handled weird despite halo coming first, very weak emphasis on fps mechanics. universally considered to be a platformer/puzzle metroidvania (duh) over fps. very good, but nowhere near as good, and required a remaster 20 years after the fact to handle in a way that could be considered correct.
there is no debate here. the similarities end at sci-fi aesthetic and fps perspective. very loosely, they center around "find enemy-shoot enemy-explore-move on", but that's like comparing a sharp x68000 to a modern gaming pc. both sit on a desk and crunch numbers.
