I use my 4090 mostly to play old Doom wads and DOS games.

5080 here, and I've been enjoying Wu Kong and Nightrei I'm just kidding, I've been playing Ephenea PSO and Crystal Project. Crystal Project isn't 20 years old, but looks like it is. PSO actually is 20 something years old. Modernity isn't the word I'd use, though. The issue is and always will be the ever increasing need to reach a larger market to make a profit and watering down of the core of the game. They don't want the 'modern audience', they want them TOO and wind up captivating nobody.

That looks very cool. A lot of people, especially on this board, tend to complain that pumping old games up to frightening resolutions kills it, and the game looses some soul if you can't count the pixels, but I argue the other way: the sleek shapes with the old textures looks super neat.

You ever try DLDSR (Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution)?
It's rendering the game at higher resolutions and down sampling. It's suppose to work better than regular AA.
AMD has Radeon Super Resolution (RSR),
Anyone ever use these? Are they worth trying?

Its alright because it lets you run otherwise unrunnable games on inferior hardware at a decent framerate but its very artifact heavy, as in a lot of ghosting and blur effects to try and mask stuff. I'd say its not worth buying a GPU for it but its cool to say, extend the life of a GPU well after its time, what devs use it for is for a shortcut to release unoptimized games with which is frowned upon in here.

The biggest flaws with cranking up 3D games:
>sometimes you see tiled texture borders as seams
>the HUD elements end up looking faggy
Other than that, 3D is meant to be jacked up as high as you can.

oh that, yeah ive used it on some lower end games, pretty much just easier to use Supersampling, pretty good for screenshots as it takes the raw resolution at full size without needing to set the monitor to 4k or something.

If you have a massively overpowered GPU and play 20 year old games, you can use DLDSR/RSR to render them at a very high resolution and down sample to improve image quality.

Your display is 1080p or 4k.
You render at 8k
You set game resolution to 8k.
You use DLDSR or RSR and the software down samples it to 1080p or 4k using an algorithm
Supposedly this makes the game look better and not require AA. (I have not tried it yet)

its just irresponsible use of money. even if you can afford it its still just money wasted on features, performance, and power inefficiency you'll never use. im sure that money could be reallocated towards more lucrative or enjoyable aspects of your life.

>>715929871
not even close. its more like those middleaged women that drop tons of money into a kitchen renovation and buy really expensive stoves - yet eat out 5 days a week and the few day they do cook its basic shit like pasta or cupcakes. its just overkill for the need. Theres nothing wrong with 80/90 class cards - including the 50 series, its just that most people legitimately dont need them and its purely wasted money if you're really only playing really old games.

>But it's more efficient than prior generations
comped to cards of the same class*
If you only needed a 3050 to do what you're doing, a 4090 is way more inefficient because its a much higher powered card.

>As for reallocation, some people don't have to choose between a GPU and other things.
even if you're making millions theres always reallocation considerations. you could easily see more enjoyment out of that $2k by investing it, having a nice meal, going gambling, or whatever else the fuck you enjoy and have zero impact on your gaming experience. Just because you can afford something doesn't mean its good value, and the moment people stop caring about value is also when people start losing money through bad poor decisions.

I'd be willing to bet what a 3050 needs more power at full tilt than my 4090 needs to render the same scene while it naps.
Pricewise, yes, a 3050 is cheaper. But it's not more efficient powerwise, because Ada is a smaller process than Ampere.
>you could easily see more enjoyment out of that $2k by investing it, having a nice meal, going gambling, or whatever else the fuck you enjoy and have zero impact on your gaming experience
I can do that as well. I'm not OP, but I do drift into phases where I'm only playing older stuff. I do play enough modern stuff where an unnecessary performance cap is something I avoid, though.

No? Your comparison only works if people like OP weren't playing games on their hardware, and were instead using game streaming or something equally faggy while owning a 5090.
Making a dish from the 1600s in a new professional kitchen doesn't detract from the kitchen or the dish.
