>>715937840 First of all, all of those games I listed literally have anime artstyles, so yes, "anime games" is an appropriate descriptor. Secondly, I'll admit that if you want to be autistic about it, "shonen games" is more accurate to say. They have the cringey juvenile melodramatic writing of shonen anime and that's why people above a certain emotional intelligence can't enjoy them
>>715938081 Shonen isn't a style or genre either. It's a category, which anime/manga has five.
Kodomo: Stuff aimed at children Shonen: Stuff aimed at boys Shojo: Stuff aimed at girls Seinen: Stuff aimed at adult men Josei: Stuff aimed at adults women
>>715937946 They're unmistakably Japanese, but they're not "(shonen) anime". They actually make an attempt to appeal to a western audience with critical thinking instead of doing lowbrow "highschool boy kills god with his big titty harem" for the millionth time
>>715938081 You are retarded, shonen is a target demographic, not a genre

>>715937840 Hey, midwinter, the entire world outside of Japan disagrees. It's like saying Swedish meatballs aren't a specific thing because they're just called meatballs in Sweden.
>>715938157 Shonen is made for teenaged boys, meaning everything about the writing is made to appeal to teenaged boys. I.e. if you're not a teenager, you're probably gonna find it cringey. It's basically the Japanese equivalent of a YA novel. Yeah, "YA novel" isn't a genre, but the term alone gives you a good idea of the level of quality you're dealing with
>>715938254 The world isn't divided into "Japan" and everywhere else
Stuff from Japan isn't a separate genre

>>715938305 Target audience has no impact on quality. See: the fact that despite being aimed at teenagers, more adults watch/read shonen than stuff actually aimed at them (seinen and josei)
>>715938305 Target audience alone means absolutely nothing
There are shonen action series, mystery series, sports series, romcoms, etc.
Dragon Ball, Death Note, and Rent-A-Girlfriend are all shonen, and what do they have in common? Nothing

>>715938470 It shows that despite being made for teenagers, shonen is still more appealing to adults than actual seinen anime (such as Berserk and K-On)

>>715938585 Dark Souls is in the vein of classic dark fantasy literature like Conan the Barbarian and Elric of Meliborune. Resident Evil is in the vein of self-aware campy B-horror movie schlock like Evil Dead. Metal Gear is a political spy thriller in the vein of James Bond and 80s action movies like Rambo. They're all very western. Not comparable to your typical Japslop at all
>>715938802 >They're all very Western >Which is why the characters all have Japanese sensibilities >And react with Japanese mannerisms >And spout Japanese idioms >And make references to Japanese tropes? Next you'll tell me Fist of the North Star is Western too.
What about Saint Seiya? Where's that from, South America?
>>715938919 >They're all very Japanese >which is why all of the characters are explicitly white >and, in Dark Souls's and Resident Evil's cases, don't even have Japanese voice acting. Exclusively English Yes, they're truly pillars of Japanese culture. Totally comparable to FoTNS
>>715938981 What I'm saying is that the majority of mainstream lowest-common-denominator anime simply isn't good. At least in the sense that it doesn't appeal to Westerners above a certain maturity level. Japanese media can still be good if it either replicates Western sensibilities (Ghost in the Shell, Berserk, Silent Hill), or handles its own history and culture in a more tactful way (i.e. Kurosawa movies, Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll, Grave of the Fireflies). But if the Japanese media industry stays churning out primarily shonen slop, it'll never be any more respectable than capeshit
>>715939308 Once again, there's no such thing as "shonen". It's a target demographic, not a style or genre. It simply means that it's written for boys, the same way shojo is written for girls, seinen for men, and josei for women
They're all the same thing, just written for different audiences
And capeshit is a bad comparison because capeshit hasn't been aimed at kids or teenagers in over a decade
>>715939490 Quality of writing varies greatly even within works aimed at the same demographic, so that means nothing.
Capeshit is a bad comparison because there's nothing like it in Japan. Not even battle shonen, the most popular kind, shares any similarities with capeshit.
>>715939308 >it'll never be any more respectable than capeshit thank god, I don't want any more pseuds analyzing the exact same list of "mature" anime

>>715939672 Capeshit is the perfect comparison to the majority of action-based shonen. It's simple, boring, formulaic, juvenile, huge money cows, designed by corporate boards instead of artists, and made for literal children, yet is frighteningly popular with "adults" (and third worlders). How are they NOT comparable?
>>715939823 They're fundamentally different. Capeshit revolves around characters who were born special. A superhero isn't something you can just "become".
Whereas in battle shonen, these powers are typically something everyone can achieve through training. The protagonist isn't special just because he has powers, he's special for other reasons.
There's a huge difference between powers you're born with and powers you gained by working for them.
>>715938305 Yes, and by the way, this would be categorized as a 'seinen game', a game for adults.

>>715939926 >The protagonist isn't special just because he has powers, he's special for other reasons. A capeshit fanboy would say the same thing. Also holy shit I am literally arguing with an alien-brained autist right now. You're missing the point entirely. I'm saying the two genres, of capeshit and battle shonen, are fundamentally childish. You trying to argue against that by saying "b-but shonen is about training, they're COMPLETELY different" is the ultimate proof of just how autistic and out-of-touch weebs are with normal human thinking. You're literally aliens
>>715940132 >Superheros: Exist in a world where they and the villains they fight are the only ones with powers >Battle shonen protagonist: Typically exist in worlds where even normal people have powers or can develop them through training
>>715939926 Lol in most shonen shit the main character is a borderline messianic figure that every other character orbits around. Also a lot of screaming, villains that never die and preach about how the main character should get stronger, and retarded plots.
>>715940921 Except E33 is a love letter to JRPGs made by people who grew up playing them. It copies them to a T. Every popular JRPG trope in the book is present in E33.

Like the other Anon said, "shonen" is just the Japanese word for boy and used to refer to anime/manga aimed at that demographic.
"Battle shonen" is kind of a dumb term anyway, there's already a genre for that, it's called martial arts
Basically, "not battle shonen" is anything labeled shonen that isn't action-focused
