I replayed this recently and my feelings for it still remains the same. I cant put this above gen 2 cuz theres literal to no post game. WTF were they thinking?! The overall campaign was decent though And I enjoyed it more than gen 2 main campaign

XY are underrated, but the cracks of Pokemon's eventual downfall are still visible in them.
These were the last games that had a decidedly Pokemon-style map, grid-based, visually-interesting routes with a peppering of side content and actual dungeons with branching paths and roadblocks.
Two big issues however are the lack of ny substantial postgame as well as the weird and unbalanced difficulty, the EXP share makes the game laughably easy, but turning it off means you're very often underleveled.

when I see XY I'm reminded of all the hours wasted biking that long straight route east of lumiose city trying to hatch a shiny totodile and never did. i threw away hundreds of totodiles to random people online

>people shit on RS without Emerald saving them
>people shit on DP without Platinum saving them
>BW is a special case but people generally prefer BW2
>XY never got a third version to save its postgame like RS did and improve upon it in other ways
I think it's pretty clear that the controversial status of this game and attributing the beginning of the decline of Pokemon to it is largely just an issue of it not getting a third version. People don't even think of RS and Emerald and DP and Platinum to be in the same league, had XY got a Pokemon Z it would save gen 6 from a lot of the heat that's been directed at it.

I feel like XY needed more time in the oven. Somebody post the image where the guy blocks your path saying the lights are out.

First iteration of 3DS Pokemon so had to put more effort into overworld design and online play.

One of the main things I remember about XY was getting frustrated trying to navigate the maze of weird camera angles that is lumiose city and so many things just keep making you go back there. I really hope it's much better in legends ZA or the game will be unplayable

Emma's story is great (And I'm happy that she seems to return in Z-A), but outside of that there's very little to do, which is a recurring problem with the 3DS generation, the DLC alleviates this issue on the Switch somewhat, but the jump from the GBA and specially the DS to the 3DS was pretty bad for postgame, even ORAS cut out the frontier for the Delta Episode, which is cool and all but the Frontier is a lot of content that is missing, same for SM and USUM, neither game has any substantial postgame.

Legends Z-A just plays like a normal 3rd person adventure game, the way Lumiose plays on XY is like that because of the technical limitations of the original 3DS.

Pokemon games are way too easy, that is part of why they suck so much. Since gen 1 you can take your starter and just smash through the whole game no problem.

Ironically they become less easy if you build up a whole team and avoid fainting wild pokemon. Especially after gen 3, trainers will start to overlevel you and you have to rely on good type matchups to win gym battles and E4.

Masuda straight up said postgame in these games is dead because brainrotted zoomers can't focus on one game for long enough to achieve any endgame goals. Of course it's also a very convenient explanation for GameFreak's legendary laziness

>people shit on RS without Emerald saving them
RS are competent enough to stand on their own, most of the criticism levied at them came from gen2 babs upset that they couldn't transfer their mons, no day/night, and generally outgrowing the series.
It's just that Emerald has more shit to do so there's little reason to play the base RS unless you have nostalgia for them.

>fairy types (for all intents and purposes the girl power types that are made to counter the “boy” type dragons)
>gay friends that interrupt the flow of the story with “I LOVE YOU!” and pose no challenge whatsoever

I’m typically immune to culture war bullshit in discussing videogames, but X/Y felt like a forced feminization of the series. Really it was the beginning of the end in a lot of ways

I'm too young to properly remember what reception to DP was like on release (although my impression for what it's worth is that there were always major complaints about it being slow and that it might have been somewhat sour compared to emerald) but while DP released on a system with almost twice the install base of the GBA it only sold a little bit more than RS (17.67 million vs 16.22 million). DP were also the fifth best selling DS games while RS were the best selling titles on the GBA. So from a solely sales standpoint it was a setback.

I dropped the series after USUM so I don't know the DLCs. Do they actually add a postgame similar to the Gen 3 Battle Frontier? That's the gold standard

Lol no, the DLC is overpriced dogshit for a few story missions you can finish in a few hours and old legendaries with a shiny lock. SV is the first game since G/S to not have any kind of battle facility
>>715941651
RS, DP, BW, XY, and SM all sold around the same. It’s GO and the popularity of the Switch responsible for Gen 8 and 9 selling so much

How the DLCs work in both SwSh and SV is that they give two new whole maps to explore. SwSh adds a facility, SV doesn't but it has some really competently made bosses in it.

I didn't do the swsh dlc after how shit the base game was but the SV dlc added 2 maps with decent stories and the second dlc is completely double battles and has its own elite 4 + champion basically
