While it is true Nintendo’s target audience is kids old school nintendo games like donkey kong country could still be enjoyable for adults too because they were challenging. That’s why it’s disappointing that dk bananza seems to catered towards children only. I’m having fun with the game but it’s far too easy to be a 10/10.

This but unironically. I grew up playing SMB3 and World and had a ton of fun learning and getting better at them. I must've beaten the two upside of 50 times combined. I feel bad for kids that get shit like Bananza where they can drool on themselves and win and they never get to have the same experience of finding hidden shit or finally beating something they'd struggled with.

Last kirby game had boss fights with actual challenge that required you to learn all their moves and perfect no damage them to earn a waddledee.
Shitters could not get them all because of this.

meanwhile the banaza fights are so fucking short and braindead the bosses barely do anything..
this is the entire grumpy kong fight. you climb up, punch the fuck out of him (he attacks ONCE in the entire fight, and if you get hit by this you're literally retarded) then you punch the fuck out of him for another second and he's dead.

Shitposting aside, I want a serious answer:

Is it possible to tweak the game to be more difficult by just not using your skill points on any health or damage buffs? Can is intentionally leave a bunch of my points unused, or does it force you to use them?

Or even if I can do that, will that just lead to other kinds of balancing issues?

You may as well skip all the bananas too then since unlike Mario/collectathon collectables that are tied to progression, they're pointless here and only serve as exp.
But no the game starts off braindead easy and and gets even easier when you upgrade.
you will gain;
balloons - saves you from a fall
Fruit drink - auto refills your life if it hits 0
Just from playing the game. you don't even need to shop for them. doing just about anything fills your bananza guage too.
so the game will be incredibly easy even if you don't spend skill points.

There are moves like the klonoa jump you can unlock but in 99.9% of situations you don't need it and can just climb up a wall.

If you don’t upgrade hearts, you start taking a lot of damage so yeah it helps. I mean, the level design is still pretty easy and there’s only like 2 bosses you’ll have to watch out for if you play like this. The main problem is that you get tons of balloons without trying that much and if you fall off the level, they bring you back. Not at the checkpoint, no. Right where you fell off. And you can’t turn them off, you could waste them all but that’s such a chore.

Because it’s Odyssey 2 and Odyssey got even more 10/10s.
In a lot of ways I like it more than Odyssey but there’s still stuff that pisses me off. Filler layers, just like filler kingdoms, exist. I’m not talking about the smaller ones, but the ones just used for a boss fight or one just used as a split path. This game was in development for so long, every layer should be its own level. There’s still some nothing bananas, but it’s a bit better than it was in Odyssey. Also the bosses are worse than Odyssey, especially the ones in the first three layers that you can one or two-cycle. Also I kinda liked how Odyssey had a bunch of minigames and races with online leaderboards, and this game hasn’t done that so far. On layer 1100 there is a unique racing minigame but I only did it once and then left.
