I've played since 2011 and further back = simpler, but not necessarily better. It's full of more sacky non-games than it is now.

You only used Kaijus with decks that can out them. I use Kaijus sometimes, depending on the format, in my Scareclaw deck, and I run Radian because his defense is only 2500 and Tri-Heart forces monsters into defense position, so the cost is 1 battle phase (Tri-Heart can declare up to 5 attacks per battle phase, usually 2 to 3)
