I really, REALLY hate the character designs, and that there's abilities tied to each one.
also it being nu3D Realms, absolutely zero excitement. I hope it'll be good, but they've done nothing but release games that had potential but were buggy, unfinished, and abandoned instantly.

Buy Black Edition. It comes with the original as well as battle out of hell, both pretty solid experiences. Overdose is rough around the edges but has some cool map locations and locations, worth getting on a cheap sale. Stay away from the rest of the expansions. Hell and Damnation is a remake of the first game, I wouldn't advise it since they basically chop the game up and sell it back as seperate DLCs.

The original was great, just skip the cutscenes because they're shit. The bosses do generally suck though unfortunately. I think the only boss I legitimately enjoyed was the boss for the first episode and that was more for the "HOLY SHIT" factor of seeing something so massive I thought it was part of the skybox turn out to be the god damn boss. Same more or less goes for Battle Out of Hell. It's great but the cutscenes suck. There's some really annoying platform sections here and there which the game just doesn't feel like it's suited for.
Everything made after the first game and the expansion is just hot garbage and I wouldn't even recommend touching them.

Overdose is maybe worth checking out for some cool levels, but if that anon does decide to go past the first game I'd recommend experiencing all of them through the "Painkiller Reload" mod, which basically takes the few good parts of those sequels and chucks out the rest of the shit.
it also adds alt fire modes for most of the guns and new animations (and hands) that are really fuckin satisfying.
