Unfortunately, the only game that has done it correctly is Sekiro, where deflecting builds up to being able to kill the boss, along with both dodging and parrying being able to cancel normal attack animations, allowing the player to sneak in hits and not just have to wait out combos. Every other game throws in parrying, but it always acts as just a shittier dodge because it can't cancel basic actions, has a tighter window, and at best staggers the enemy for a second or two or after a millennium "breaks" the enemy weapon and causes them to do 10% less damage. This means the player is still stuck in the shitty, "Your turn, my turn" loop, and even worse, to get anything out of the parry they have to sit around not being proactive with attacks or combos because they can't cancel into a parry.
