An essential component to creating an all-time great turn-based RPG is a party of strong characters, and Expedition 33 doesn't have that. Maelle and Verso are the only good ones

Gustave was great and his death makes him memorable. I still think Lune will be remembered for her feet, Sciel is the only subpar character and her gameplay doesn't help.
But I agree it's never gonna be part of the all-time great JRPGs because it's a JRPG made for people who hate JRPGs. It's still a good game, but I don't think it has the staying power to be remembered a few years from now.

They are as good as the plot allows them to be unfortunately, the only real odd one out is Sciel who is meant to appeal to women.
This is just one of the many problems with act 3 imo. All the side character development happens right before you find out it doesn't matter, and these characters don't get any agency in the ending.

You made a mistake, the praise is overblown and primarily comes from people who don't read much and don't play JRPGs but the game is still great. Even if you don't care about the story there are some fun surprises gameplay wise a bunch of challenging fights that are satisfying to do.

I liked Gustave but I honestly dont feel like I lived with him long enough to really feel the gut punch of his death. Like we saw a little bit of history in the prologue showing he is a human with emotions, discovered a bit of the world with lune and Maelle, but nothing ever kicked off to make me incorporate any sort of emotional attachment to him. Compared to Aerith where we learned to like her as a human and then learned her significance in the story as well as her efffect on Cloud gives her a more lasting impression that is discussed even today.

This is the best game ever made and the greatest story ever told. I'm currently helping a giant chicken get back his magic pebble that enables him to swim and I just stopped in my tracks and started crying there and then, so much so that my wifes boyfriend had to come and console me. Never have I played a game so relatable, so emotionally draining and one that will forever define me. 11/10.

I cared more about the perspectives of Verso or Maelle than any other character in a JRPG. This website vastly overrates Japanese writing.

Considering the genre of JRPG has the most mind numbing gameplay possible, the writing is the only thing worthwhile. People will shit talk E33 for being Parry-slop, but I was more engaged in E33's combat than in any other JRPG I've played.

I wish I could day I cared for anyone other than Verso but lets be honest here the writing in E33 isn't noteworthy and the cheap drug PSA that is the ending wasn't as deep or thought provoking as people claim. I cared more about the cast of Tales of Graces F in skits than anything in E33's narrative.

Game has no indication of this whatsoever. It's purely about grief. It can be interpreted as anti-drug because the two concepts are very similar, but it's 100% about grief.

Gustave is great and I thought that both Sciel and Lune had solid chemistry with the male leads. I don't think that characters need to be great individually, rather they need to have a good party dynamic. The interactions between Gustave and Sciel did a lot to improve her standing in my eyes.
Monaco is the weakest party member because he is played as a joke more often than anything else. Maelle is second weakest because she feels more like a plot device than a real character.

If it didn't have this it wouldn't have realistic characters. This thing that is interpreted as a cliche is because this is how actual humans behave. The game does the right thing to let you choose to indulge in that human behavior or have another character force you out of it.

>Asian girl that doesn't wanna do research like her parents tell her to

are compelling all-timer masterpieces of writing? expedition 33 is literally more important than anything Tolstoy or Melville ever wrote.

>Gustave was great and his death makes him memorable
If you think they did a good job with that death you have negative taste. It's one of the biggest fumbles of a lead characters death in any story. The only people that fawn over it are the types of bots that watch reaction channels in order to pretend to have real emotions, and then when they come across something that actually makes them feel genuine emotion once in a blue moon, they get insanely upset and disturbed at it.

I agree with this part. In a few years, the only people who will talk about this game will sound like people discussing a souls game because the parry shit will be the only thing anyone remembers, they won't be discussing any turn based challenges in any of the core encounters or any of the characters. Just parry strings and the discount inception concept of artists getting lost inside their work as a way of coping.

What the fuck are you genuinely talking about? Even if you do all the side content and all the camp conversations, the only party member with whom gustave has any real back and forth about anything is lune. He's one of the most underbaked characters ever.

I do think Sciel and Lune kinda lose relevancy with the twist, and they don't bring it back with good side content for them. Lune gets a reused boss and a tiny area, and Sciel got nothing.
