Because this doesn't affect Valve in anyway. They run a storefront, they don't care what happens to the games after they're sold.
And for their own games they've always supported community run servers. You can go play Ricochet, their least popular and least supported game, right now if you want to.

Every single one of their games, including Half Life from 1998, can be played right now on the latest specs and hardware and online.

I purchased Half Life in 1998. I can still play it to this day. Can you do that with your copy of Ocarina of Time from 1998 on your Nintendo Switch 2?

Didn't Valve delist the original copies of HL1 and you can't play them anymore even if you own them?

The original release of Half-Life doesn't work on Windows 10/11.
The Steam version has been updated, the original 1998 Sierra release has not.
This is no different than how you can play Ocarina of Time on the Switch, but it's a digital emulated copy, not the original cartridge.
This is fine however, nothing prevents you from playing OOT on your actual N64, or your 1998 copy of Half-Life on your Windows 98 Pentium III PC.
SKG doesn't prevent this or require publishers to update their games for modern systems.

This. Works perfectly on Arch. Didn't even need to install anything, just put the disc in the drive and go. I love Linux.

So if you have the original copy of Ocarina of Time, you can play Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo Switch 2 without any additional payment?

Those degrade over time and will stop working.
