The damage sponge enemies, and the roadblocks that slowed you to a crawl because of teammate switching really screwed the game.

The advance games are just sequels to the originals. You should try the adventure games.

Sega went third party, and thus didn't have to try as hard. People also bitched endlessly about the non-speed stages in the adventure games. So they said "fuck it, we'll just make them play the same speed stages 4 times in a row".

It doesn't get praise enough.
There literally isn't a single bad or mediocre song in the soundtrack. Every stage theme is amazing. Even each theme's theme is also corny but sovful as fuck.

SA2s speed, treasure hunter, and chao garden stages are all improvements. The trade off is worse mech stages (and more of them) and no overworld.

Instead of trying to improve the speed stages, they just made them more linear and added even more automation. Basically covering up the blemishes SA1 had instead of improving them like a proper sequel should. And the treasure hunting stages are worse solely because of the stupid Emerald radar change to artificially pad the length of the game.

SA1 has a better radar, but SA2 has stages built for treasure hunting which are more fun. You cannot tell me with a straight face that any of knuckles SA1 stages beat pumpkin hill or wild canyon.

People keep saying heroes is getting a remake but I doubt it. Sega just came out and said they'd rather make new games rather than remake SA1/2, so I can only assume the same logic applies here.

Yes and no. It's better than 06 in every single sense of the word, so that's already a good thing. If you play only with a single team and then use a save file for the final stage, it's completely fine. Problem is playing through every single team and replaying the same stage over and over again, and the bugs start to become more apparent and more annoying. The game's stages at least have a great art-style and the OST is 10/10 and even the basic gameplay formula is actually really good. But you can tell some of the level design lacked polish and it was too rushed and ambitious for it's own good.
Overall, the game was too ambitious for it's own good and it's own release window. No wonder Iizuka was hospitalized when developing this game. This game should've needed an extra year and a half of polish before being released. They should've had the B-teams work on more games in-between and I am sure we could've had a much better game. Same with Shadow 05 and even Sonic 06 to a degree.
