In the case of TRPG, the loss of popularity came because of so many in these last years involving generic jap fantasies in Medieval or Victorian fantasy land with ye-olde-english dialogue YET again. Repetitive concepts naturally results in lack of interest sooner or later. That and the resurgence of wewstern RPG after BG3 also was a factor.
These games could use some changes to make things interesting like range of vision and its obstruction by smoke, terrain actually being affected by either climate or other factors (slippery slopes or terrain, landslides, craters by explosions), stealth sections or at least alarm systems, etc
