This. Scope is higher. You have to design way more, program way more and test way more than 4 niggas in a row which outsell SRPGs anyway.

How popular is Disgaea nowadays? I want to know how big the market share is for this niche, but I can't really think of any franchise of this type still going today aside from Fire Emblem. Though to be honest, I hate the awful anime aesthetic of the latter
>B-but Disgaea is way more anime than FE!
Yes, but it has way more personality. The aesthetic of the latter is no different from any seasonal isekai. Just look at the awful design of pic related.

Honestly in an industry where instant gratification is paramount, slow burn games like tactical RPGs are hard to sell. Even over the top ones like Disgaea take a minute to get to the good shit, even for those who are already into the above aesthetic

10 years ago it was a niche in as you said a niche genre. Nowadays only its most diehard fans are trying new games in that series. I think Triangle Strategy did decent.

triangle strategy was great but it's hard to recommend because of how story heavy it is

I didn't mind Triangle Strategy but I think the WORDS to gameplay ratio was off. I don't mind lore, especially in TRPGs but it was a lot in that game. Although maybe I felt that way because the voice acting was so fucking bad. I don't typically mind dub voices but TS is a rare example where I switched to JP

You fundamentally cannot have
>strategy
and
>rpg
together in a meaningful way as each side of this coin is at odds with the other conceptually.
The best SRPGs are not RPGs at all. Look at Advance Wars for a prime example of why the genre can only be good when you remove leveling and long-term party planning.
You can adjust the level of challenge in a non-RPG strategy game in any way you like and always know precisely what the player will be capable of doing, allowing for more fine-tuned challenges and bespoke scenarios. You cannot know for sure what the player's party level/composition will be like in a long-form SRPG and therefore this makes it impossible to fine tune the challenge.
There are a rare few exceptions to this rule, but the issue with those is that the games are so fundamentally designed around giving you almost nothing in the way of levels and demanding that you play to 9/10ths just to be able to beat the game (demanding a full reset if you play suboptimally for too many scenarios as you will soft lock through lack of resources/power) that they cannot reasonably be brought into this discussion. Plus no one has played them. These games are effectively the "perfect" strategy RPGs because the RPG elements are so limited and you must literally squeeze them out of the game with no reasonable way to farm/grind/cheese, and this makes them impractical for the average SRPG slop enjoyer.

For a hard game seeting to program, we sure see at least one announcement of these fucking games every year anyway

>"why did X die anons" thread again
Only thing that died in these last years is point-and-click adventures. Rest of genres and sub-genres are alive, only unpopular or somewhat unused lately
In the case of TRPG, the loss of popularity came because of so many in these last years involving generic jap fantasies in Medieval or Victorian fantasy land with ye-olde-english dialogue YET again. Repetitive concepts naturally results in lack of interest sooner or later. That and the resurgence of wewstern RPG after BG3 also was a factor.
These games could use some changes to make things interesting like range of vision and its obstruction by smoke, terrain actually being affected by either climate or other factors (slippery slopes or terrain, landslides, craters by explosions), stealth sections or at least alarm systems, etc
