Most notable in my area was Whataburger, it used to be family owned but sold to a firm in Chicago. So far they haven't ruined it, but I'm waiting for the inevitable day they try to kill the golden goose.
The only thing I take solace in with this is that this is the fate of pretty much all companies in the world--eventually someone will take it over, run it into the ground, then cash out for a quick buck while another one takes their place. It's a continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.
