You're a disney adult who wanted a disney ending. Everyone who hates Gustav's death has the same illness.

She's a deeply traumatized little girl. Either you force her to face reality and suffer, and hopefully overcome her pain, or you let her wallow in fantasy until it consumes her and her family.

There's no good choice, but one ending is clearly worse than the other.
