Mario 64 has a fucking terrible camera and pads out the game making you replay levels over and over. Plus Banjo is just a much more charming and funny game

Mario 64 had a big impact on the genre, but 90% of the people who claim it's still fun today are just lying to themselves

Rare just always knew how to run circles around Nintendo from a technical standpoint. The early version of this game was so good it scared the shit out of Miyamoto into delaying OoT for an entire year.

it's pretty amazing rare was able to make a platformer where literally nothing felt fun...movement was clunky and floaty and unsatisfying. i would just play around with the movement in mario 64 trying to do cool stuff because it feels good to control mario

Mario 64 aged better than Banjo and that's not even up for debate. Banjo was great for the time because you were a kid with no money and not a huge library of games to choose from and it padded the hell out of the game time being a collectathon. You could debate Banjo was better bang for your buck at that time but unless you're a diehard fan of the collectathon genre, Mario 64 proved over time it was the better GAME

Nah, I just beat (well played Mario 64 and dropped it) both this year, Banjo Kazooie is far better. Better level design, better gamefeel, better camera, less annoying physics, doesn't constantly boot you out after each star, better artstyle, better humor.

Sorry m8, but you're blinded by nostalgia.
Mario 64 was a huge deal near launch and that feeling is still in your mind. Even on og hardware on a crt the controls feel unresponsive, like you are fighting mario all the time and most of its stars really arent fun to do.
Banjo kazooie I really played for the first time last year and I had a BLAST, the levels were way more fun and original and the game just had a much better flow because you didnt get shat out with every jiggy.

Banjo tooie is complete and utter cancer tho

No, it's legitimately terrible, a total slog to play, and its only appeal is exclusively as an autistic toolbox for speedtroons and romhacks.
>absolutely atrocious camera constantly getting stuck on terrain, spazzing out, facing the wrong direction, refusing to go where you want it to
>slippery and inconsistent physics, especially underwater, snow, or on slopes. Not to mention Mario turns like a fucking boat
>2D Mario's momentum and physics work in a 2D environment where you always have a perfect view and perspective of the action; it's significantly worse in a 3D environment where you are constantly fighting the camera and there are fundamental limitations to perspective/depth perception
>these momentum and physics are especially egregious when the movement is relative to aforementioned awful automatic camera that refuses to go where you want
>constantly boots you out after every star and makes you retread each stage a half dozen times all the way from the beginning of the stage with a tiny stupid piecemeal change
>a dozen frivolous jumps with dial a combo system for platforming is just extra abstraction bullshit that further separates the game from feeling like a natural extension of self
>overall level/enemy/hazard design are extremely basic and boring, mainly as a result of the extremely open-ended movement combined with the dogshit camera
>constant easter egg hunt for random bullshit grows old very quick
It feels like a glorified fucking tech demo for 3D movement. As a game, it is just awful.

Galaxy is good, but when it comes to platforming-platforming Super Mario 64 is still on the throne. It don't get much better than that moveset and freedom to experiment in sandbox levels. Galaxy is a huge sampler of different types of challenges that aren't inherently platforming, and different set paths where you do things with inverted gravity, I can't in good faith put it above SM64.

Camera, level design, boss design, hazard design, artstyle, physics, pacing, padding, etc. All those areas in Mario 64 are dogshit, but it doesn't matter because all you care about is
