FF13 is an acquired taste. You'll either love it or hate it, and I'm guessing most people won't care for it. It's like FFX combined with Persona 1&2's combat system. You set up your party into persistent strings of actions (basically telling each party member what to do at the same time instead of per character turn), which later as the enemies increase in power and diversity of action this necessitates more involved and difficult planning of strategy on your part. The voice acting and animations are very well done, the plotting isn't.

yes. there is depth to the combat but like the last remnant it's completely obscured to the player with no real pay off or reward for exploring the depths of it.
story sucks, characters suck, setting sucks, pacing sucks.
just notice how almost all ff13 threads revolve around 2 things: it being underrated because reasons, and Vanille waifufags.

Final Fantasy XIII ended up being for me one of the most moving stories in the series. I know, I know, incomprehensible plot. I know I know, unlikable character writing. I know I know, moaning Vanille. I know, I know, L'Cie Fal'Cie Cie'th and so on. I know, I know, datalogs. Yet it doesn't matter, for what the game is trying to say is still based, true, based and true.

In all honesty, not really. It was the symptom of a problem and not the root cause. Which was the big Western influence of gaming in the mid to late 00s to early to mid 10s.

If XIII hit with Western media as much as they were hoping instead of the state mandated "Japan Bad" propeganda, we might have actually seen XIII just stay at 1 entry and XV & XVI be actually turn based instead of the action slop we have now. The downside being that XIV would have likely stayed on it's laurels and would not have gotten the ARR reboot.

The reason XIII got sequels was because SE needed a quick cash turnaround after XIV 1.0 failed.

Mainline FF barely has any bad games and FFXIII isn't one of them. The problem is that the game lacks an overworld. Is post-game filler found in every other FF game? But it's a big deal for most. It also gives the illusion that you're not playing an auto-scroller, which is true of every other FF game.

Anyone who tries to say it doesn't is literally retarded and their opinions on games are worthless. FF13 isn't just a bad game because it's "linear". The game is genuinely badly designed and badly made.

The tutorial is way too fucking long. Should've been five chapters maximum before the party got yeeted into Gran Pulse.

There's a lot of reasons. It takes a lot to like the cast. The battle system is interesting but the inability to change the party leader leads to a lot of annoying problems. Such as getting wiped by an AoE because you can't control your positioning and one death can be a game over. The game holding your best tools hostage for most of the game certainly doesn't help. And 13 gets caught up in way too much melodrama even relative to the series

No its a pretty good game its just the problems it had were baked into the story structure. People bashed it for linearity but its a chase story, and the battles are paced in such a way as to keep you properly leveled for the whole game.
The biggest issue with it is it expecting you to read an in game wikipedia to understand the characters using in-universe lingo without explaining what they are saying.
Also the JP dub is better than the english dub here by a lot.
