I just finished replaying the trilogy and boy did T2 age the worst. So many barren levels with empty rooms, so much metal and dumb robots everywhere.

2 > 3 > 1

I put 1 last because i prefer breaking into mansions in the city and less of the dungeon crawling elements. I'm not being contrarian because i still like 1 despite it being my less preferred game. But i am quite passionate with saying that i think the people who claim that Thief is supposed to be a down in the bonehoard sim are wrong. And that is not where it's strengths are. 2 should be seen as a very important game for the stealth genre that really pushed it forward.

The biggest downgrade for me with 2 is the absence of bunnyhopping. 1 Garrett feels like he's capable moving like lightning and climbing anywhere, 2 Garrett feels like a boomer with back pain. Metal age also means no wood, and no use for rope arrows. I think I used rope arrows like once or twice in T2 while in T1 its one of your main tools. T1 also had: zombies, giant spiders, burricks, sentient fireballs, various mages, apeniggas, haunts and more. T2 has: dudes and mechs.

The first half of Thief 1 is 11/10, the next quarter is 8/10 and the last quarter a steaming pile of shit.
Thief 2 maintains an above average/adequate quality throughout the game but nothing that matches the first half of Thief 1.

I never understood the appeal of ghosting. You're just missing out on half the game mechanics and can't explore properly. It's much more satisfying to convert the level to darkness, take out the guards and make it your territory to pick over and find all the hidden loot and switches

Almost perfect contrarian post, just needed to make it 3 > 1 >2 instead to be the most contrarian opinion ever.

Actual tier list is 2 > 1 > 3 > 4
I also don't believe 4 is even a bad game, it's one of the most over-hated games of all time. It's still the best stealth game we've had since 3.

Try ghosting a few levels and you'll understand the appeal. Gliding your way through the place that is permanently buzzing with guards is much more exciting than "wait till npc turns his back so you bonk them with 0 challenge". Ghosting allows you to truly understand the level, pay attention to its structure, mind the surfaces, remember the good shade spots, internalize the timings, water and moss arrows become much more important (btw I'm not talking about strict ghosting, for example I would consider using flash bombs acceptable, as long as you never get noticed). I recommend ghosting Ascend The Dim Valley, this FM has the perfect level of difficulty for ghosting without obnoxious shit like tile floors and guards that turn around once a century.

I dont agree however that
>Interactions are gameplay and ghosting has none by definition
I interact with the guards by continuously evading them, learning their patrol routes, and paying attention to the sounds of their footsteps approaching. To me, its a meaningful interaction. If I wanted to just kill dudes I'd play an action game with better combat mechanics.

another problem with ghosting is it breaks the item economy in the game. Normally when you explore and find items it's a nice reward. It feels good to find those items because they're useful. You collect gold in the map to spend it on items for the next mission. All of that is gone with ghosting since you can't use 99% of the items

it gives enemies danger and fighting chance instead of the overpowered blackjack that always knocks out full grown men with zero repercussions. They really should have balanced it more with randomly timed wake up timers. Where guards can regain consciousness if not properly tied down and gagged with rope, a limited consumable. Woken up guards are perma alert for the rest of the mission and set off alarms/other NPCs

Because that is what Geralt ultimately is, a thief. Whos main concern is slipping in and out of places completely unnoticed to not draw heat on himself. Not some mass murdering psychopath leaving piles of corpses behind

Like I mentioned, I subscribe to the style of soft ghosting where the only limitation is not being seen and not employing violence. Which means the only items that aren't being used are strict weapons like sword, blackjack, mines, fire arrows, and broadhead arrows. You're talking about supreme ghosting which is basically a form of roleplaying.

itโ€™s just a way of building the challenge off the mission results screen, which is one of the secret ingredients for why the LGS thief games are good. Even without tracking ranks or anything like that, itโ€™s very satisfying to go from a level run where you pickpocket only 1-2 people to pickpocketing everybody.

you are right that ghosting feels so good in learning the layouts of the place and moving undetected between the sentries. I have noticed that with a ghosting mindset my immediate instinct is to go as vertical as possible, looking for rafters and rooftops to maneuver around and scout the place

even in what is otherwise a heavily focused action game like dishonored ghosting feels good with the blink mechanic especially.

>What mods are necessary for III? I think I used like TFix or Tafferoatcher for the first two don't remember.
They've compiled all the essential mods into one patch: The Sneaky Upgrade - so that's all you need. However I'd recommend not installing the new textures or the Minimalist project for your first playthrough. The new textures can be a bit out of place and the Minimalist project, while cool, makes a few major visual and gameplay changes to the point where you're not really playing Deadly Shadows anymore. Other than that install everything else - there's way more major changes than the first 2 games but that's because DS was kinda busted thanks to it's engine/being forced to run on the OG Xbox and the fans have spent the last 20 years fixing a lot of its issues.

Good FMs are timeless but Tafferpatcher hasn't been relevant in a long time, it's T2Fix for Thief 2 now.
Preferably lite versions of both TFix and T2Fix. GOG versions come pre-patched although they're not up to date which might cause issues with newer FMs.

It's just the higher difficulty when getting all loot on expert becomes too boring for you.
I'll usually trade certain things, like if I ghost then I'll allow some level of mid-mission saving. Other times I allow for KOs but never save until the mission's complete.

So /v/, how do you fix Thief's blackjack (the most powerful weapon in the universe)?
Make hits super loud?
Make it break after X uses?
Every mid-high level player understands that actually using it as liberally as the base games allow drags the experience down.

>some fatsos, who you can't move after knocking out
Oh shit that's a good idea. Any FMs with enemy properties like this?

It's simple. I'm not a fag who gets mad and thinks "curated challenge" is all that matters in whether a game is good or not.

Black Parade has enemies with unbonkable helmets
>who you can't move after knocking out
Thats literally every nonhuman enemy in TDP and TMA. Zombies also get up if you stay close.

It's not to me necessarily. I just don't like when I have to hold back to allow the game to maintain challenge. The game not being able to cope with the legacy skill and collective playerbase sharing strategies for 27 years is understandable. Any game with as much explicit fan content as classic Thief is to me as much a software platform for amateur game designers as it is an actual game.

I can't stand fan mods built around the mindset "We need to make a challenge for REAL fans of the series!" because they invariably end up being tedious and boring, and ignore a good 80% of the original game's design and mechanics so that they can focus on forcing challenge through a few key mechanics. If TBP gave every enemy a metal helmet and sprinkled zombies randomly into every level while also making you die in 1 hit, it would have been shit.

>every nonhuman enemy
Well there's my blindspot. Human enemies are where the meat of Thief is, which is why I would value those changes more than just making levels filled with non-human enemies. Non-humans to me are more like mobile level hazards.

I prefer to just moderate my use of certain mechanics that deflate the challenge and thus the suspense. Like complaints about savescumming mean nothing to me. That's a self-imposed problem.
