i played up until the water tower and maybe an hour or two past it and then stopped. idk how far i was at that point but the game was just too shitty for me to push through at that point. OP i understand what you mean. The first half hour or hour of the game is decent and it has an insane potential but the actual gameplay is terrible. this is one of the few games where i think a fan mod or a remake is in order to change it because it could have been a lot more manageable/bearable with some minor tweaks. i have said it before many times on /vr/ but i feel like they never had a playtesting phase and like it got rushed out the door. there are way too many signs even with half a playthrough or whatever i had to ignore it.

I have heard the game is even worse in the second half so im glad i dropped it. i may give it another attempt one day but honestly me playing half way through the game wasnt even my first attempt. i just kept seeing the box and felt like i needed to play it but it just isnt fun.

i remember not long after the water tower you fight these autistic gorilla/monkey enemies and i probably dropped it a half hour after that. a common criticism i have of sh4 is that many of the enemies feel like shit from either fatal frame (ghost) or stuff from resident evil outbreak (infected animals) doesnt feel like a silent hill game. thats also ignoring lazy enemies like sentient tentacles.

im glad there are people that enjoy the game but i gt annoyed when people try to say that sh4 is somehow the best silent hill game, it just feels low effort and rushed in every possible way. i dont think its a coincidence that it was the end of the franchise. where is sh5?

Most people, upon release, didn't consider it a Silent Hill game. It was only after the absolute train wreck of the rest of the franchise that people retroactively saw it as "one of the good ones." Sort of like how in light of the Disney trilogy people love the star wars trilogy people love the prequels now, or at least don't hate on them as much.

But Silent Hill only ever had three games. There are no more, nor could there ever be another. Any game made in the future with the Silent Hill title, no matter how good or bad, is not, in essence a Silent Hill game, and is simply trading on SH's brand recognition.

After finishing the first 3 I was looking forward to 4 since it seemed so out there compared to the rest of the series, and so far it is. I just got to the orphanage in the Forest World so I'm pretty early on still but I can already see the cracks start to form. Combat is honestly more obnoxious than it was in the past games so far. I still want to finish it because I think a lot about it is really interesting, but based on what I've seen so far its likely not going to be a fun ride.

frankly my issue with sh4 isnt that its a bad sh game its just a bad game period. thats the issue with it. i can usually enjoy a game even if its not what i expected but its just a poorly made game in general and probably needed another 6 months or so. no clue if it was rushed out the door or if they just didnt have their heart in it and figured it was "done".

it makes people made but i say it a lot that even silent hill shattered memories is a better silent hill game than sh4. i dont care if it makes people made its just the truth and its also a way better game in general. the exploration is rewarding. the monsters look authentic to the franchise. it has the right tone and atmosphere. its interesting enough to play through to see the ending. personally i finished it around 5 times over the years despite not finishing sh4 a single time. just a boring game.

NTA but i enjoyed aspects of homecoming despite its flaws. i had a relatively good time playing through it all the way back around 2010 or so. even that is a better game than sh4. i didnt play downpour because it looked retarded. homecoming was just something i bought on sale at gamestop for like 10.00.

i doubt there will ever be a solid sh game ever again because without the right team and without corporate meddling you will never really get anything with the same feeling as the first 3.

it's not a "reimagining" of SH1, it's just a different game with some of the same names reused, it's not scary because there's no threat in the game until you go to the otherworld/iceworld segments, but then you just run until you escape, the psychological profiling is busted because it deems Harry a sexual deviant because you looked at one risque poster for a second too long, and the puzzles are not puzzles, just move some things around until you pick up a key.

the character writing was "okay", the graphics are really nice minus some performance issues, the controls are interesting and the music is good.

the GC version is my preferred way to play AND truly no version looks as good as that, every other port is based off the bad 2007 PC port and fucks either the lighting, the transparancies or the colours in general of the whole game, even the Wii version looks worse because of the fake anamorphic widescreen.

It is abysmal but still probably worth forcing yourself through once if you like the rest because the story, scenario/concept and some of the aesthetics are supremely interesting. I just have no clue why did they completely revamp the gameplay and game design in general into this trash after the first 3 because otherwise it wouldve probably unironically been the best of them all. yeah i noticed the wii version doesnt look that good i never knew what it was but i just tolerated it because of the fun control scheme. in a way it reminded me of an arcade game from back in the day where you got to interact with what was happening like a lightgun game. its worth the trade off but i think the GC looks better.

i dont think the entire appeal was being scary but more that it had a strong atmosphere and ambience. i think the horror elements take a back seat to those elements. you can have a very scary game without the ambience and it wouldnt be silent hill. you can have a silent hill game without the horror but with the ambience of the older games and it will feel much closer to a silent hill game than the one which is all horror but no atmosphere.

it may be a poor example but what comes to mind if metroid prime. the main reason that game is memorable to me is the atmosphere of the game. thats what makes it feel like metroid prime. without that its just another FPS game. surely there are way better examples but atmosphere in a game is an underappreciated aspect of the full product. its one reason why people on here make threads about
