Odyssey is a great game. It's the first genuinely good 3D Mario game besides World. It doesn't have a bunch of shitty boring levels like Sunshine and Galaxy, and it doesn't have shit movement like 64 and Galaxy. DK also isn't like Odyssey outside of a surface level similarities because it looks like a total conversion mod, you haven't played the game. This is the ultimate gotcha for people who don't have a Switch 2 and didn't play Bananza.

This game is legitimately better than 64, Sunshine, and both Galaxy games. Everyone nostalgafagging over 64 and Sunshine ignore just how bad the level design are in those games. Moving Mario around can only be so much fun if I'm just moving him around on boring, flat plains with barely any stage hazards. Got a Star/Shine? Would be terrible if the game booted you out of the level because the games were rushed and they didn't have enough time to make meaningful content for them.

As a whole I enjoyed the game but the “quantity over quality” approach with the moon collection was a misstep. Each world only “requires” like 10 to “beat” and you get 6 moons just for itching your ass

This was the only Mario game I dropped halfway and never finished, and I played most of them including Lost Levels. Them shitting out moons like candy made me so fucking bored.

Odyssey is better than Galaxy. Galaxy is not even a Mario 64 game. It's a completely linear form of Mario 64 level design, and a lot of the stages are overrated, and getting 120 stars was too easy.

True, Delfino Plaza hits that perfect nostalgic sweet spot. You hear one second of that guitar riff and you're instantly 12 again, dicking around on a GameCube during summer break. Odyssey's soundtrack is good, but it leans too cinematic. It doesn't have that same laid-back, vacation-core vibe that Sunshine nailed with literally one looping melody. Sometimes less is more.
