Basically, chapter 3 is where the metaphysical hell starts. Big God (probably The Creator figure) is trying to do a system reset because humanity keeps screwing up, but Little God (the one who actually cares about mortals) is like "yo thatโ€™s overkill." Then God's Avatar steps in like, "nah, trust the process," but heโ€™s more like a mouthpiece than someone with real authority. So Little God is stuck between following the divine PR rep or doing their own thing, while everything collapses around them. Also thereโ€™s time travel, memory loops, and possibly a metaphor for depression. Hope that helps.

The characters you interact with and the world you're in are mostly creations the Dessendre family, who are "Painters," with the ability to create entire worlds and sentient beings within their works, which are referred to as a Canvas. These paintings seem to house a fragment of the Painter's soul, which keeps the Canvas alive even when the Painter isn't present. The Verso you interact with is a Painted version of him, created after the Real Verso was killed in a fire when trying to save Alicia (Real Maelle.) This was a result of a war with the Writers, which we don't learn much about. It should also be noted that the Canvas experiences extreme time dilation, where a relatively short amount of time in the Real world translates to years or even decades within the Canvas.

Their mother, Aline, went into a deep despair after Verso's death and somewhat blamed Alicia for Verso's death. Aline entered Verso's Canvas to escape her despair and to preserve what was left of Verso's soul, and painted all of Lumiere and much of the world we interact with. Verso's Canvas was originally largely quite simple and childish, as he created it when he was young, and mostly housed his imaginary friends like the gestrals and Esquie. She also created a Painted version of her family, whom we mostly interact with throughout the game -- they're the ones with the black and white elements to their appearance. Painted Verso and Painted Renoir have their scars, Painted Alicia is all black and white and wears the mask, and Painted Clea is also black and white. Painted Aline is The Paintress.

>and Painted Clea is also black and white.
I blame Clea for that, she has eye color when she comes back to it.

[Cont]

Distraught with Aline's physical and mental decline while she remained within the Canvas, Renoir sought to enter the Canvas and bring her out. This caused The Fracture, and Real Renoir was trapped at the base of the Monolith by The Paintress. Real Renoir was trying to erase the Canvas in order to force Aline to leave, while The Paintress tried to preserve it and used Painted Renoir to fend of Expeditioner. The Gommage is Real Renoir making slow progress in erasing the Canvas. Meanwhile, Clea was also assisting Real Renoir by painting Nevrons, which was depriving Aline of Chroma to use to maintain the Canvas.

You destroy The Paintress, which tips the balance in Real Renoir's favor and allows him to finally erase the Canvas. At the same time, Maelle realizes that she's actually Real Alicia, having forgotten who she really was as she had also sought refuge in the Canvas to escape her physical and mental trauma from the fire. Maelle, choosing that name but melding both her true and Canvas identities, is now aware of her powers as a Painter within the Canvas, brings back the party and they fight to try and restore the Canvas.

They reach Real Renoir and convince him to allow Maelle to stay within the Canvas. At that point, however, Painted Verso, seeing the suffering that being in the Canvas is causing Aline via the "portal" Real Renoir uses to leave, decides the Canvas needs to be destroyed to keep his family safe as he now shares Real Renoir's fears both for Maelle and Aline. He also feels this will allow the fragment of Real Verso's soul to rest, and he himself wants his existence to end.

If you choose Maelle's ending, the Canvas persists but Maelle will eventually decline and die within it. Painted Verso is also forced back into existence so Maelle can maintain her Painted family. If you choose Verso's ending, the Canvas is erased, but the Dessendre family seems to find some kind of closure.

>Painted Aline is The Paintress.
Nigger what. Aline is from the real world, that's half the point of the story, her getting lost in the painted world

There is no Painted Aline.
Anyone with that cracked face aesthetic is tied to the real family members who have souls, either as some kind of projection or a lingering remnant of their soul.

I'm pretty sure you're right, I misspoke. The Paintress is Real Aline's presence in the Canvas. I'll admit that the cracked face versions of the characters was always a bit confusing to me.

A son of a cartel family got killed by another cartel, so his mom now play in her dead son's minecraft server for a week straight without eating or sleeping out of grieve. Then the father joined the server and build an obsidian tower around the mom's character (she doesn't have diamond pickaxe) to get her to leave. Meanwhile the eldest daughter log in with creative mode on and spawn mobs everywhere.
This should be the version that OP can understand.

Alicia has spent too much time gaming and is shitting herself, Renoir wants her to go to the toilet. Painted Verso wants Verso's soul to stop painting because he is painting cringe. Aline has gone senile.

Maelle is a play on the word "Male" to challenge the player into contemplating why a man would ever want to play as a female in a video game.
