I would love to see more advanced devs use modern technology with retro art styles to leverage tech for more interactivity, more detail that you can play with and less about realism.
Think about all the processing power you could save from skipping the ultra realistic rendering to have fluid simulation, real time cloth physics, high levels of destructibility, fire propagation, weather that impacts the environment, advanced NPC / Enemy AI that remembers things and reacts realistically..
We've given all these cool things up to cram as much visual detail into games as possible. Give me the chunky pixel art 3D graphics and use the power for cool interactivity!
