I have noticed that most of the games I like the most have really shitty gameplay
for example, my all time favorites:
VtMB - a game so bad that it could not be completed when it came out, horrible combat even after 20 years of community patches. Basically a walking simulator with nuisance that masquarades (pun not intended) as gameplay
Diablo 2 - shitty skinner box simulator
Silent Hill - a horrendously incompetent Resident Evil clone
Planescape Torment - visual novel with nice animations
Fallout - a RPG with shitty GURPS system haphazardly implemented, quest design is so bad that there are two warring factions right next to one another so you don't waste time even crossing the street. NPCs can bug out and stop responding mid-quest Late game is basically mutant Scientology crap
The only exception to the rule are Mikami games like RE4 and Vanquish
